Well being that all these people such as the team responsible for Portal, IceFrog who's responsible for Dota, the modders behind Counter Strike, the ones behind Team Fortress, the ones behind Day Of Defeat, etc. were all hired by and worked at or even still work at Valve. Valve is pretty much made up of these people so giving credit to Valve is giving credit to the people who came up the ideas and made the game. Valve itself and its original founders might not be responsible for some of concepts of the games, but it's the people who worked or still work at Valve who are and the company itself is what gave a lot of these people the ability to pursue their visions.

While some fans might not know the specifics, they're not exactly all that important. Valve still played a huge role in a lot of those games becoming what they are to us today.
