Vice method bending lapped IHS

Thread Starter
Got a new i7-4770K and plan to lap it (done before) and delid it (haven't done before).
It seems that hammer&vice method is the latest most popular method for delidding. But here is the question - doesn't hammer&vice method bend lapped IHS? I fully understand the idea is to go easy on hammering and use wooden block to spread the impact evenly. But then even a very slight bend would kinda defeat the whole purpose of lapping IHS.
So what are your experiences on delidding lapped CPUs? And has anyone lapped the IHS after delliding - bare IHS without chip?
Thanks.

test, delid then lap... seems obvious to me.

Aslong as you don't seriously overtighten the IHS in the vice, you should be fine and won't suffer any bending. However, do the lapping after the delid so you'll have more chance of righting any very slight bend that could happen if you tighten it too much...

IDK, I've never done either but just my thoughts. redface.gif

If you are bending the IHS, you are tightening the vise way, way too much. Those things are a solid chunk of metal - it would take quite a bit of force to bend one in a vise.
