Try not to skimp on the motherboard, especially if you are wanting to run a 4930k.

Gigabytes low end offerings were a little weak, but this may have been fixed now. Asrock boards from what I hear are very good OCers. Asus did really well on x79, all their boards were good.

In general the VRM cooling on all manufactures boards is a bit weak, it could have been better. Nothing a fan can't fix or even a watercooling block on the VRM

It's looking like it's just a Bios update for existing chipsets.

I can highly recommend the ASUS P9X79 lineup. I have a P9X79 Deluxe in my wife's i7-3820, and P9X79 WS in my 3930K system, and both have performed perfectly since December.

When it comes to X79 boards, you don't want a "cheap" one. The increased power demands of the Hex-core processors demand a high quality VRM. 8 DIMM slots also require quality trace routing and design to ensure maximum stability. I am not advocating dropping $400+ on a gaming X79 board, but I wouldn't go for the bargain basement either.
