Suggestions for 3 setups using older hardware

Thread Starter
Basically I am wanting to reconfigure some systems I've had and some i've purchased for a decent price into 3 PC's

Goals:

1> Gaming PC for my Son
2> HTPC
3> Backup/sale cheap locally

The hardware I have available is:

CPUs
Q9550 (not sure on stepping yet will arrive in a few days)
Q6600 G0
E6400

Coolers:
Tuniq Tower 120
Zalman 9500
CM Hyper TX3

MBs
Asus P5B Deluxe wifi
Gigabyte P35-S3G
Gigabyte EP45-UD3L

Memory:
4x2 gb g.skill pq 800 mhz
2x1 gb g.skill 1066 mhz
4gb (not sure if single or 2x2 or 4x1) ???? (will arrive in a few days)

GPUs:
HD 5870 1gb
HD 4890 1gb
HD 5770 1 gb
8800 GTS 512

HD's:
OCZ Agility 30 gb SSD
WD 500 gig AAKS
WD 640 gig AAKS
250 gig (will arrive in a few days)

PSU:
Xclio 500 Watt (stable or goodpower can't remember)
Thermaltake 700 watt Toughpower
Thermaltake 500 watt TR2 TR-500 (practically New bought new a few months ago)

Case:
Generic mid tower
Coolermaster Centurion 5
Thermaltake V3

DVDRW
20x x2
?? (will arrive in a few days)

I'm considering the following setups:

Son's Gaming
Q9550
Tuniq Tower 120
P5B Deluxe (because of the ICH8R chipset mainly) or EP45-UD3L
2x2 gig g.skill PQ 800mhz
2x1 gig g.skill 1066mhz (or 4 gb
ATI HD 5870 1gb
OCZ Agility 30 gb OS
WD 640 aaks programs/games
20x DVDRW
Thermaltake Toughpower 700 (or the T-500 since I know its new)
CoolerMaster Centurion 5

HTPC:
Q6600 (or e6400) not sure yet doubt the e6400 would be a easy sell, both OC to 3.2 ghz stable
Hyper TX3 or Z 9500
EP45-UD3L (or P5B Deluxe)
2x2 gig g.skill PQ 800
HD4890 1gb
WD 500 gig aaks
20x dvdrw
Thermaltake T-500 (or Xclio 500 watt stable/goodpower since it has dual pci-e and has been rock stable for 3+ years)
ThermalTake V2

Backup/Local Sale
E6400 (maybe Q6600 if I really decide to sale it)
Z9500 or C TX3
Gigabyte P35-S3G
4 gb (not sure on speed or configuration will arrive in few days) or 2x1 gb 1066 mhz (if the ram i'm getting is 2x2 and good speed)
HD 5770 1gb
250 gig (will arrive in few days)
dvdrw
Xclio 500 watt (or Thermaltake T-500)
Generic case

Use the 700w in the main rig and the tt 500 on the htpc. Try to keep 4gb per rig if possible. Use the p45 with the q9550. Otherwise you're pretty dead on.

Would you keep the new TR-500 or the Xclio 500 which is 3+ years old?

Would you consider replacing a 2 year old OCZ ModXStream 600 watt with a unknown age Thermaltake Toughpower 700 watt in my Ivy build?

Both are garbage to be honest. I'd keep the tt 500w but plan on replacing it soon. Cx430s are usually dirt cheap and a lot more reliable. Keep the tt 500w until a cx430 goes on sale.

Put the ep45 with the q9550 and the p5b deluxe with the q6600. You had everything else pretty well nailed. Get rid of the ep35 and e6400. You won't get as much out of them obviously but I'd personally rather keep the better equipment just in case.

Thoughts on the TT 700 vs the OCZ mXs 600 ?

When I bought them 5-6 years ago the Xclio were in the recommended PSU thread here, and the ModXStream 600 was in Phaedrus' recommended psus in his software.

Now everyone says they are garbage ...
I could be easily wrong. I'd check but I'm on my phone. Look up reviews of the psus to be sure.

What aBout operating systems? How Bout for the HTPC Linux Mint 15 xfce since its the lightest. I have 3 operating systems on my pc in my Sig, win8, win 7 and lm15 xfce. I always end up with booting mint for watching online shows and even for some light tf2 gaming. I've tried many ID's and find mint the friendliest. Flash player pre installed, and older ATI cards supported out of the box. The proprietary drivers are easy to install also. But other than that, looks good! I love older hardware and find it soothing to put a retired pc back together again. Oh one more thing. Your 3rd pc could be a file server with something like openSUSE or centOS on it even.

I was using win7 x64 on a c2d at 2.66ghz with 6gb ram and a 7770 on my 1080p tv. I use xbmc with the xbmc remote app and unified remote app for keyboard and mouse functions. It does great and plays most games great.

So your q6600 with 4890 should do just as well. Try the apps I listed out on your phone. The unified remote requires a server app on the computer and xbmc remote requires configuration in xbmc.

Just my 2 cents on what I've used and enjoyed.
