HP dc5100mt w/ 3.2 ghz Intel Pentium 4 Processor - Project / Core questions from a n00b.

Hello!

I'm a n00b, so please forgive me in advance if I make a n00b mistake like posting in the wrong area, etc.

So... I got an HP dc5100 MT the other day on evilbay for only like $55 bucks (including shipping!).

Came with an Intel P4 3.2 ghz processor chip and 2 gigs of ram. It even had the 7200 rpm, 80 hd running XP still in it!

CPU-Z SPECS:

OS - XP/Ubuntu
3.2 ghz CPU
P4 - 541
Socket 775 LGA / Prescott

Seems like a GREAT, CHEAP overclocking project to work on. thumb.gif

One of my main objectives with this system is to do it on the cheap. 2cents.gif

So, a few base questions I have to ask first are:

  • Any suggestions for a good, CHEAP fan? The one in there now is crazy LOUD.
  • What other kinds of CPU chips could I slap in there? Do they make anything dual-core for this MB? Identical 3.2ghz chips like mine are selling for like freaking $3!
  • What overclocking software do you recommend?

Any other tips, suggestions or input are always welcome too.

Thanks!

try using cpucool or setfsb for overclocking because hp has locked multiplier settings in bios

I would recommend going to Monoprice and getting a 5-10$ fan SilenX are low.

- CPU wise HP / Dell / Gateway, is restrictive to their motherboard, I would find out what your mobo can take. But honestly you may have better luck just building your own.

That's also, why you're here to learn and build right :-)
