Custom (EK) reservoir question

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

I'm going to watercool my 700D for the first time and I've figured out all the parts I want/need to do this. I'll be cooling a 680 gtx and a 2500k with a Nexxxos UT60 360 + 240 (modding lower drivecage), and I might add another 680 or 2 780's in the near future.

The problem for me is: deciding on a reservoir and pump. I've been looking at the XSPC D5 dual bay combo, which has received much praise in reviews, but on a few forums and youtube video's I've seen complaints about leaking and insane vibrations/noise.

So I've decided to get an internal tube reservoir with a pump(top) attached to it. The problem is, I'd really like to mount the reservoir directly to the pumptop using a male-male 1/4 connector. I just dont know which res would allow me to do that. I've seen some reservoirs but they dont have the standard option of just connecting the pumptop directly into the center of the reservoir; the openings are all off-centre or on the side of the bottom etc.

Is it possible to put together my own tube res using EK parts like the EK-Multioption RES X2 - TUBE 60/200mm ? I'd like to add the EK-Multioption TOP W/Thread to both the bottom AND the top so I can feed the res with coolant from the top of the res straight from my radiator, and then use the EK D5 pumptop inlet fitted to the bottom of the res so it gets it's coolant from there. I've read the X3 manual and EK specifically states that you should not use the top of the X3 Res as an outlet, which is what i'll be doing..So thats why I come to you guys to ask if this is possible. I'd like to combine it with the EK D5 pumptop that would perfectly match my CSQ 'foggy' plexi gpu and cpu waterblock.

Would it be a smart move for me to build my own reservoir like this and get exactly what I want? I just want to know if it is even possible at all.

Thanks in advance guys smile.gif

I added a basic render + painted tubing of how I'd like to have my setup. The reservoir is not the correct one, so please imagine the bottom would be the pump + pumptop attached to the res !

I've done this with two ek reservoirs, using the bitspower male to male dual rotary adapter.

The reservoirs I used were both ek-150 v2, one advanced and one basic. The difference between them was merely the number of inlet/outlets on the tops and bottoms.

In my main system, I have used the 'top' of the basic 150 as the bottom. This is because it has one 1/4 thread, which is perfectly centered. I mounted that onto a bitspower d5 top, attached the reservoir and then used the 'top' from my ek-150 advanced, which has 3 threaded holes. This means I can have my return line and also a fill port in the top of my reservoir.

I used the remaining parts to make another reservoir for a recent build, and it works just fine. The ports are not perfectly centered, and the inner tube (the one that prevents splashing/pushes warmer coolant down into the res) was too long, so i took a dremel to it, cut it to size and then sanded it with 1500/2000- grit sand paper. Works like a charm.

Thats my experience with it.

But - why not just buy the Bitspower d5 mod kit, mod top and then the 150/250 upgrade kit? Then you will have a res mounted directly on top of the pump. Then you could add a 3 port bitspower top to replace the 1 port top that comes standard, and then add an aqua pipe on the inside of the res.

Hope that could shed some light.

PS - not too sure if ek v2 & v3 reservoir parts are compatible with each other rolleyes.gif

The way you did it is pretty much exactly what I want to do yes! So even though EK states in the manual that you should NOT use the 'top' on the bottom of the res, it still works? I was a bit worried that it might not hold because of pressure or something. I don't think I can get the X2 res in the Netherlands anymore though frown.gif which is why i was hoping these parts i linked would be compatible because of the same brand/tube diameter.

I dont really like the bitspower top because it's not the 'foggy' plexi like the EK one that I had in mind, I have the matching EK blocks for my GPU and CPU as well. I guess if I can't find the right parts I might go that route though!

Thank you very much for your input smile.gif

No problem, happy to help mate.

Alternatively, there is the EK D5 x-res 140. If I am not wrong, this is compatible with the res tube of the ek x3 series.
You could basically unscrew the stock res that comes with the xres 140, and screw in your own x3 res tube (150 or 250) or whatever you like.

The d5 pump attaches straight to that, and the kit should come with a mounting system including two secrews to secure it to your case.

Here are some pretty horrible photos of the reservoir setups i mentioned earlier:

Thanks for the pictures! Thats sort of how i'd like it as well, but I'd mount the res to the center opening. Do you think I could use the original bottom, which would be at the top in my case, hooked to my loop so the coolant (coming from the cpu in my render) would fall down into the reservoir? Or would that splash too much?
Yeah that should be fine.

If you have the small inner tube which is designed to prevent splashing, you should be able to screw it in to one of the ports on the inside of the reservoir, so it prevents splashing when it enters the reservoir.

How many ports do you have on the bottom of that cap?

I think it has 3, so I'll use one of them to feed the res from my loop smile.gif

I ordered all the parts last night, thanks so much for all the help bro! Can't wait to get started biggrin.gif
