Is anyone else having severe input lag in Source games? It's very noticable if you compare Half-Life: Source and Half-Life: Classic.

I find CS:S & L4D2 ok....

hi all! biggrin.gif

two questions i noticed in this thread:

Crossover

you can get it here if it's not in your repos. It's the commercial version of wine. Work on their end goes back into WINE, so it supports the effort and doesn't just leech.

StarCraft 2

i've run HotS for a good while. note that you may need a certain MS true type font to avoid crashes when Kerrigan levels up in the campaign.

you may also need to run with textures set to High instead of Ultra. memory management is weird.

also, StarCraft doesn't play well with CPU throttling. if your CPU is set to slow down for light use and ramp up for heavy use, SC2 may not be ramping up, thus causing frame issues.

try using CPUFreq to adjust your profile from Ondemand to Performance when you want to play. that should significantly boost your performance.

http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=4619;forum=1;msg=143374

been using Linux since '09. started with Ubuntu, am now on Manjaro. smile.gif doing a desktop reinstall around Christmas.

nice to see this club. smile.gif

I was yes. I had tried both drivers closed source normal and beta from AMD by adding the x.org edger PPA. It was odd as initially it had been ok. I had tried with various vsync options and mouse input settings with varying effects but it was still there. This was when using Cinnamon. I installed the latest KDE 4.11 side by side (which worked 90% but didnt install the GTK handling packages) just to test if it was actually the environment rather than the application.. it was. KDE has no mouse input lag and the games + desktop are also butter smooth with no frame hickups or stutter.

In fact the latest KDE is amazing and its improved massively more than the already great level it was at the previous version, surely its the best desktop environment in the world right now from a customization and features point of view? All the animations are better (cooler biggrin.gif) and slick and there is a ton of new stuff, it also feels very stable and hasn't bugged out once, i have yet to try KDE media center but that looks quite good.

Also soon there is an android notification application out for KDE that shows your incoming txt messages and calls on the desktop alerts system..

Sorry, I didn't realise you meant AMD...I find the performance using the open-source drivers for the HD4850 to be dire in L4D2 compared with Windows. Windows will max it at 1680x1050, but I'm having to run it at Low with a couple of Mediums (with max AF, gotta have it!) in Linux just to get 30-40 FPS (with regular drops). I blame AMD though, and their lack of support for an older card (as in, they've practically withdrawn their closed-source driver without messy hacks on the X server & kernel versions)

the problem yes is that they did drop support on the closed for the 4xxx series which is crappy for a lot of people. The closed source AMD drivers are getting much better i can play l4d2 @ 1080p on a a10-5800k (probably slower than your 4850?) at 60fps with only a few drops when everything is set to medium with no AA ! which means when the drivers mature i should see those drops going and a constant 60fps with an extra setting on high somewhere..

it would be nice if the open could match the closed, there getting a bit closer but if you take away the loss of the closed on linux vs the closed on windows and add further loss then yea its not going to be a nice experience running the open right now
post #207 of 1019
AMD drivers are getting better, I'm actually doing pretty well with my 7950 under my newly installed #! (crunchbang)

which OP if you want to change my distro to Crunchbang 11, that'd work because I'm using that now.

I am using Xfce. You're saying it has something to do with GTK?

no i think its purely a vsync / GL-buffer issue which each desktop environment seems to handle differently,KDE is using something called KWin and it handles the displaying of frames differently, in the settings menu (desktop effects) there are 3 - 4 different settings for vsync and they do seem to have a perceptible difference on input lag. I could get smooth graphics with some settings but it was like i was playing a pre-recorded version of what i had just inputted.. dropping from tripple buffer to double in L4D2 reduced it and removing vsync entirely seemed to give better results still.. so there is something about the frame buffer that is odd and not responding quick enough. From reading it seems like the archaic xserver (which is an OS within itself) is getting in the way.

Wayland and Mir hope to remove xserver and bring forward a frame perfect no lag display environment and they should be incoming in the next few rounds of distro releases

So all i can say for now until these new display servers properly arrive and get integrated is for you to experiment with KDE's more advanced vsync settings (on xfce i didnt see and easy gui for this) and from my experience feel an improvement through the smoother Kwin system which as far as i can tell is also being kept to integrate with wayland.

*you might have to use the opensource driver if you go with 4.11 KDE as there is a present supposedly solved bug but its still there for me which stops effects working on the desktop when using the latest AMD fglrx catalyst driver, 4.10 has no problem with this.
