Only thing I'm disappointed in is the horrible bastardized gnome-shell they included with it. If anything I'd of preferred either none or Openbox maybe XFCE at the heaviest.

agree.

Mint + Steam + Desura and perhaps one day GOG or another Linux game site, running xfce or kde.

gnome 3 is just awful. Tried fedora 20 out in a VM earlier and some very basic things just cant be done in Gnome3 its frankly laughable.

I hope people don't think thats what a typical Linux desktop is like, what are valve playing at ?!?

I mean Crunch bang actually looks like a minimalist valve themed arty desktop to begin with

crunchbang.png

Just put a piston logo somewhere, run your 'optimisations' and your done, voilia many people would be happy as that as a workable desktop

crunchbang_grey_glow_desktop_by_mmesantos1-d54mbmo.png

That's what i had in mind with a splash screen to choose between SteamOS and Desktop on boot and some custom desktop animations for blingyness

Valve used to be clean and minimalist in their styling but they seem to be heading towards something more generic

And the sad thing is Crunchbang is still Debian based so it really wouldn't be hard to swap out the gnome desktop for the Crunchbang Openbox desktop setup ( as you said it's already themed pretty decently to fit in with Steam )...

The controller already works out of the box in Linux. See this article

....using the generic HID driver.

They can do better than that, I doubt performance is optimal with a generic driver, considering how specialist the device is. This is a user interface that has never been done before, of course a generic driver won't cover all bases (just like your generic USB mouse driver won't operate your Razer mouse the same as the Razer driver will). I believe it appears as a KB&M at present!

yea, i mean even the second workspace could be a nicely adapted existing full screen steam web ui with automatic controller support should you wish to run to desktop first and control from the couch and have it integrated into the desktop with the option to press whatever the equivalent start button is on a 360,ps4,steam controller is to launch to big picture (thats if BP is needed at all with that kind of setup)

Not saying that cant be done now, il probably do it but im guessing over time its going to be hard to get some of the raw benefits valve bring with their compositor and optimizations when you run openbox and a standard kernal. This could lead to a scenario where some who choose not to run SteamOS are getting a less than optimal gaming experience because they didn't want to run Gnome3 + Valves kernal and compositor or having to build custom distributions, which seems at odd's with what valve are trying to do.

Please make a new thread in the Linux section where it will be more likely to get noticed. http://www.overclock.net/f/131/linux-unix

Include some more information such as which Linux you are using, all cards you have installed, and which monitors are using which cards. There's some more information that will likely be requested as well.

Dead fall adventures is out for linux now. I seem to remember hearing it is a fairly simple game but it might be worth a punt if you want to see nice graphics on your Linux machine. I think atm AMD catalyst isnt playing too well with it but the open source amd driver, intel driver, and nividia closed are fine

Bought Natural Selection 2 in the Steam sale (£1.89 - bargain!), but it doesn't work in Linux (at least on my machine). I ignore the massive load times (I don't know what pre-caching is, but it sure takes a while!), but with the graphics turned down to just above minimum, I get about 28 FPS in the menu, but it's bit higher in game/sandbox. However, attempting to fire causes the game to crash to desktop! I need to launch it from the terminal to try and capture the crash, but it's like alpha software right now frown.gif

Fingers crossed the developers get it sorted quickly, as I don't mind paying for alpha software as long as it gets stable at some point
