Depends on the games, even more than in Windows. Most current ports (Feral for example) are very nvidia optimized. Wine also favors nvidia drivers. To play it safe go nvidia.
However, AMD is not that bad, especially if you are not afraid of running development level software. The latest Mesa has full opengl support. Current Polaris cards run really well with the latest Mesa code and kernels, sometimes better than AMD's own drivers.

I'd get a high stock-clocked RX 580 8GB x 2 (like 2 x XFX RX 580 8GB GTR-S) and set up my Windows 7 gaming VM. I have been avoiding nVidia for a while now and couldn't be happier. Also, this Sapphire R9 Fury is excellent in Manjaro. Great card for $250!

I've been running two gtx 970s on w10 and on Arch... obviously I can only use a single card because sli doesnt work, at least not on anything I play. I guess Im regretting not buying a single more powerful card with more vram. I'm spoiled with windows playing in 4k using sli.. wish my gaming experience was similar in linux. Next time Ill get a better single card set up. Thanks for everyones input.

I had Crossfire R9 290s and when they worked they were beast-mode. But it seems like multi-GPU support is dying off rather quickly, so I'm happy to use 1 strong card from now on. Especially with Adaptive Refresh rate monitors where max framerates don't particularly matter much.

What Linux games have you been playing? Isn't GTX 970 performance in Linux still pretty rockin?

The gtx 970 does well but I'm just complaining tongue.gif I can't use both cards together on a single display. We play Dirt, Tomb raider, Mad max, Jotun and Bioshock infinite... playing in 4k works just in the 20-40fps range. I agree my next upgrade will be one strong card... but then again my 970's run out of vram under windows rolleyes.gif
