Regarding ATI BGA IC chip

I'm Currently having a laptop which the BGA Chip had dead cause of over heating. I'm planing to change the BGA chips but i'm worry about the compatibility of the chips.

My laptop Model : Dell Studio 1558
Motherboard : DP/N 04DKNR
Current BGA Chip Model : 216-0774009 ( ATI HD 5470 )

Since the current chip is gone, I would to to upgrade the chip from 216-0774009 (HD5470) to 215-0754009 (HD5750)

Below is the different of 2 chips:

216-0774009 HD 5470 FAB (NM): 40 BUS Interface: PCIe x16 2.1 Memory: 1024 Core: 750 Memory Clock: 800 Config Core: 80:8:4 Pixel: 3 Texture: 6 Bandwidth: 12.8/25.6 Bus type: GDDR3/GDDR5 Bus Width: 64 DX: 11 OpenGL: 4.0 Processing Power:120 TDP Watts: 13/15

215-0754009 HD 5750 FAB (NM): 40 BUS Interface: PCIe x16 2.1 Memory: 1024 Core: 550 Memory Clock: 800 Config Core: 400:20:8 Pixel: 4.4 Texture: 11 Bandwidth: 51.2 Bus type: GDDR5 Bus Width: 128 DX: 11 OpenGL: 4.0 Processing Power: 440 TDP Watts: 25

I wondering is it fine to upgrade? Thanks in advance ~ thumb.gif

If the ATI chip is embedded onto the motherboard then you cannot replace it. BGA usually means that it isn't something you can replace. If it is not embedded into the motherboard, if it has an MXM connector, then yes you can upgrade. But you need to look at your heatsink and make sure it will properly cover the ATI 5750 because the heatsink might only fit an ATI 5470 and not fit an ATI 5750.

Thanks Freakie for the reply. well it is not with MXM connector. Perhaps i don't find any compatible replacement for current 216-0774009 chip, Guess only choice was using rework station to took out that chip and doing reballing or just replace with another same chip. =(
