I would wait for 5th gen if you're planning on upgrading.

3-4th isnt a big leap.

I have also been looking for an upgrade to mine that makes sense, but since HT would offer next-to-nothing for me, there has been no serious upgrade for a 2500K to this day.

Was there ever a processor that kicked as much ass for as long as the 2500K...? And at a price that has had no reason to come down but a few percent after nearly 3 years. I'm so psyched to land on a chip with such a lifetime, and you should be too! thumb.gif

i7 920 and Q6600 still have a good amount of life in 'em.

I'm upgrading my 2600k tomorrow at microcenter. For me, it's not the cpu, but the chipset. Native USB 3.0, PCIE 3.0, more SATA 6 ports, support for faster memory, slightly better IPC. And I'm sick of wiring my front USB 3.0 ports to the middle of my motherboard. None of these things on their own are really compelling, but put together they're pushing me over the edge. My 2600k also needs 1.36 to be stable at 4.5. If mine would do 4.8 though, I'd probably be keeping it.
