Should I step-up?

Okay folks this has been bugging me for a bit and I just want to know what people with much more knowledge than I think.

I purchased this card http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=04G-P4-3778-KR basically on day one when it was first available. I had my first computer built and was just waiting for a GPU to complete it, this popped up and I jumped on it.

However I have seen what people are doing with the 780's and I just cant stop thinking about it. Should I take advantage of EVGA's Step-Up program and get this card? http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=03G-P4-2781-KR

My 770 has been flawless and has handled everything played on it, but the more research I do the more I am thinking that it wont be able to keep up as well as a 780 and I don't want to be looking back thinking I should have stepped up. Also the whole debate over the 770 not being able to utilize the full 4gb is also in my mind.

Yes my rig is current, I don't mind the wait times and this will be costing me about $150.

So Yes or "Shut up noob and enjoy your damn card"

Thanks.

Seems like a vanity buy to me. But if you have the cash and it bugs you, it's your money to enjoy.

I wouldnt pay extra 150 for GTX 780, save that money for newer gen. cards and enjoy your GTX 770.

780 is 15-20% faster

Perf.Per dollar is 29% worse compared to 770

So... The games you play - are you keeping them steady at 60FPS? If yes - forget about the step-up IMO.

Regarding the 4GB memory buffer - that is entirely situational. It can handle the 4GB RAM just fine if there are heavy textures since they get allocated in there and sit tightly as there is no need to drop, hence it poses barely any load on the memory controller and does not saturate the memory bus;
If, however, you are stressing the card out at super high resolutions (supersampling, overly heavy anti-aliasing (MLAA)), that would use a lot of memory bandwidth since the image rendered for every frame is traveling through the bus.

And my 2cents.gif here - if you are running a single 1080p monitor and do no/mild/average modifications to your games (you know, ENBs, custom textures - considering up to 2048x2048 maps), then you'll be more than fine with a 2GB buffer, let alone the 3 Gigabytes the 780 sports.
If you are a very heavy modder and like to stretch things into the extreme, you might as well utilize up to 3GB in a single 1080p monitor. However, keep in mind that SLI-ing 770's would ease up the load on the memory controllers (speaking of huge resolutions and aforementioned AA/ubersampling scenarios) since the cards will alternate for each rendered frame; hence each one will account for 1/2 the FPS you play at.

I usually skip every other generation and I was on the 680 next would of been the 880, I couldn't pass up the 780 classified and they are fun to play with. Today I played BF3 at 1300MHz for over an hour on water and they never went over 40c tongue.gif

If your not getting a classified then forget it keep the 770...

Yes it very much is a vanity buy at this point since my question only stems from my lack of knowledge in this subject. I am learning though thumb.gif

Konkistadori and fragamemnon thank you both very much, I keep learning new stuff every time I come here.
I am a gamer most of my games are RPG's, RTS and BF3. Plus many older games that I have been replaying on PC, some with MODS but nothing to crazy mostly just visual improvements. As for the above 60fps goes the answer is yes, I can honestly say all my game play has been very smooth.

As for you USFORCES I'd take you more seriously if you didn't have a Heep as an avatar. biggrin.gif lol j/k
To tell you the truth I wish I could play BF3 for any length of time I keep getting "connection timed out error" Driving me crazy done everything I could find to fix it but no luck so far.

Thanks again everyone I will be keeping my card, now off I'm to bed tomorrow is my Monday mad.gif
