Is there any particular reason you are trying to explain this? Is it for detailed configuration issues.... or are you trying to give them a "layman's term" explanation?

This is a good analogy, most folks have a PC much like the car they drive to work, they buy it, maintain it & drive it around to work, shop & everything in daily life. It stays the same as the day it was bought.

The guys more into their cars do lots of street legal upgrades for the looks & performance while still using them for daily driving. (like many OCNers with the computer, delidding, watercooling etc.).

Then there are the guys who like to know nothing on the street can beat them, big bucks into the engine & barely street legal (light subzero cooling, chilled water, phase change).

Finally the alcohol fuelled funny cars & stuff. Can't drive it around anymore, can just take it to the track on race day & see if it is the fastest machine out there. (liquid nitrogen, helium & dry ice).
