bare die metallic finish

Just wondering if anyone knows what the shiny metallic finish on a bare die is? Is it actually metal?.....if so I need to know what type it is for galvanic corrosion considerations....considering using a novel custom TIM which is water based and so possibly conductive.......so for instance could I use such a TIM on a bare gpu die mated to a copper heat sink?

Looking at some info on cpu production I guess this highly polished metallic surface is actually the silicon wafer......or at least the back side of it?
