Not sure where exactly it says xfire anywhere in this thread?

i can upgrade the ram on the old pc....so which setup would be better??>>>would 7770 fill the gap of a better cpu?
The Pentium Dual Core E2140 runs at 1.6 Ghz and only has 1 MB of cache, it will bottleneck the HD 7770 in every game - I know because I have one and it even bottlenecks an HD 4670; the Pentium G2020 is based on IB architecture, runs at 2.9 Ghz and has 3 MB of L3 cache, it's a much faster CPU, plus with 4 GB of DDR3 RAM your minimum fps in games will be better than with DDR2 in the old system, not to mention new DDR2 is more expensive. Yes, the HD 6670 is slower than the HD 7770, but if you must chose between one setup and the other, the one with the G2020 is better as it will give you better and more consistent performance.

Think that guy saw 'pair' and '7770' and proceeded to jump the gun without reading what was actually posted.

thanks for the advice...i forgot to mention that i can get the 6670 ddr3 version..so its much slower than ddr5 7770...thats why i am having doubts for buying g2020+6670 ddr3///...:/

As I said, the E2140 will even bottleneck a Radeon HD 4670 with 512 MB of GDDR3.

I benchmarked Crysis Warhead with it at 1024x768 with medium settings and got around 17 fps average, then I benchmarked the same card with a Pentium Dual Core E5800 3.2 Ghz with 2 MB of L2 and got around 34 fps.

With the E2140 the HD 7770 won't perform any better than the HD 6670, nor would an HD 6670 perform to its full potential whereas with the Pentium G2020 the HD 6670 will and if you later upgrade to a faster GPU, say something twice as fast, the Pentium G2020 can handle it.

okay,.,,thanks for the help...i am going with g2020+6670 ddr3
post #18 of 20
I suggest you go for the Pentium G630 or 2020 with HD6670.
The new pentiums perform similar to an E8400 core2duo.
Think of them as an i3 without hyperthreading.

Honestly, anything faster than a 9600GT will be severely bottlenecked by the E2140 dualcore.
Even if you use watercooling, you'd be lucky to reach 3ghz on that old cpu.

Another cheap upgrade option would be going with an APU.

An A8 5600K quadcore with HD7560 igpu will cost almost the same as a G2020 with HD6670.
You get quadcore performance, with a slightly slower gpu.
I think the 5600k igpu performs like an HD6570.

I wouldn't pair an e2140 with a HD7770, the G2020 and the HD7770 would be a better combo. You might be able to get a G630 or G645 for a little cheaper than the G2020.
I've built a couple systems with Sandy/Ivy Bridge Pentiums and a HD7750, it's a good combo if you're looking not to spend much and don't mind playing at medium settings for most games.

g2020+6670 ddr actually costs slightly more than a8 5600k...i could go for an a8 but i cant afford high speed ram to pair with it..frown.gif...moreover,doesnt per core performance matter more?most games use 2 cores and dont use ht anyway....:/
