[SOLVED] Please help me with my Asrock 939Dual-SATA2 - Page 2

Does this board have any bad caps? The caps around the RAM slots on my old DualSATA2 started swelling about a year ago, and it would throw memory errors with my old Patriot XBL+K RAM at DDR400 with 3-3-3-8-1T. The RAM can still do 2-2-2-5-1T in another system...so I took a look and sure enough. I didn't tinker around much afterwards as it was a low end spare system. I even had a PATA drive connected to the thing. I tossed the board. It was no good and not of much use to me after the caps swelled.

Nice to see so many people with 939 systems still running. smile.gif

@ toughacton - today I ordered those Corsairs. Should be at my place tomorrow so I'll get you posted on my progress. BTW, do you know maybe what are TRC and TRRD options in BIOS (memory timings section)? I don't want to leave it on 'Auto' but can't find any info on correct values for these (or any actually) modules. And Asrock even didn't put them on their manual so I was quite surprised when saw them in BIOS for the first time.

@breakfromyou - thanks for the tip on bad caps. I was checking caps but only those big ones near cpu socket and they looked OK to me. Tomorrow when I be installing new ram I will take a good look at those caps around memory slots.

TRC should be around 10 or 11. Its usually TRAS +3 for these ddr1 modules so for yours, tras of 8 +3 = trc of 11
TRRD should be 3 i believe

Neither should prevent normal function if its off by 1 though, so you can use a TRC of 11 and RRD of 3 and should be just fine. Hope that helps. Also if you ever want to try your hand at overclocking it, you can check out the 939 appreciation club which has all the info you could ever need on the format. However, lets get your stock stable first. thumb.gif

It looks like it is my lucky day even though it's 13th;) Corsair's are installed, tested with Memtest86+ (no errors) and running fine at 2.5V in dual channel. Here's a proof:

As for caps, I checked them and all look good to me. I just hope they will stay that way a couple of years more because I don't like upgrading my PC too often.

Thank you very much guys for your great help.

p.s.
Regarding OCing, I will look into this too but I'm afraid my PSU is not good enough. And also I need a new GPU now, so I could play my dream game Stalker at last.

Looking good! You might see if you can get the board to work with a command rate of 1T instead of 2T. It helps performance, but sometimes it can be hard to get 1T stable even at stock speeds. Though with only 2 sticks, it should work. IF not though, chances are you won't actually feel much of a difference.

If your PSU is recycled from the 10 year old build then i would definately be cautious overclocking with it at first and make sure its at least 400Watts and a quality PSU(since its older and probably not very efficient). IF you do decide to give it a go, just let me know I'll be able to help.

As far as graphics go i think the recommended gpus for STALKER were the 256mb ati 1950 or the geforce 7900GS. So anything from that and newer ought to work. 8800GT or GTX was one of the best back then, though it tends to still be a bit on the pricy side for a used card of that age. I've got several X1950pro 256mb cards and they are really nice for a directX9 card and run between 25-30 bucks used (though there are newer games that require direct x 10 or 11) Though honestly if you can find a 8800GT or GTX with 512mb of ram or more, that would be the card to get. Much more than that and your CPU will bottleneck the card pretty badly.

Thank you very much toughacton for your help and all hints on PSU and GPU. But because I don't want to make this thread to be off topic please feel free to join discussion in my two other threads:

What GPU would you recommend for s939 mobo?

Will 450W be enough for my oldskool gaming rig?

As for command rate of 1T - I remember reading somewhere that it's quite pointless to use this setting. IIRC, the gain is near zero in normal PC usage. But would love to know your opinion on this subject. Is it really worth it?

You are correct for modern DDR3 there is next to no real performance difference between 1T and 2T command rate. 2T is generally more stable so for more than 2 sticks of RAM and almost every board will use 2T in that case.
For DDR1 that 939 uses, most times the end user experience isn't changed when you change 1T or 2T. Though thats normally because 2T is forced when you use 3 or 4 sticks. However, the more RAM that you have, the less you feel the effects of the 2T command rate. With 2 gigs or less there is a bit of a difference. Its mainly benchmarks that get effected, certainly not as much in games or general usage. Mainly if 2T gets you faster stable RAM then its better than slower RAM at 1T.

So to put it shortly, if its stable at 1T it will be slightly faster (though unnoticable) and you might as well do it. If its not stable go back to 2T and don't worry about any major lost performance.

Glad you are up and running though. I'll check out your other threads. Welcome to OCN btw!

I will test it at some point but not now as I really don't want to reset my CMOS again (that jumper is so difficult to reach on this board when having PATA cables installed).

Thank you toughacton once again for your help.
