I'm planning to make a server but I think its going to be a little point less for me. Theses are the specs I want it to be

GIGABYTE GA-Z87MX-D3H
Intel Xeon E3-1240V3
CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB)
2x WD Blue 7200RPM Raid 1
Rosewill Stallion Series RD400-2-SB 400W ATX 12V v2.2 Power Supply

What else can I do besides hosting a gaming server?

you can do anything you like with it....network file sharing (like a NAS), website host, VM host, print server, domain controller, etc

if you just want to use it for storage and game hosting throw any OS on there and get to looking up tutorials for sharing folders over the network. Use a virtual machine software for hosting the game server.

I tried searching for virtual machine software and I found a few on this link but I don't know which would be the best. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VirtualMachines

500$ gets you the mobo and the proc realistically for good quality server hardware.

Also I think running vm's is stupid... you could likely just use freebsd for all your needs....it is definitely the server OS of choice.

x2 that would work perfectly for him if he is running a few game servers at a time, just bandwidth is going to be a restraint.

I looks at them I think I might go for that but my concern is the sound level.

no not compared to an average desktop. Both cpus have a lower tdp and stay pretty cool
