What GPU would you recommend for s939 mobo? - Page 2

Well, I don't think I will get that 6670 cheap as it's quite a new model (2011) so they are rather rare on after market. Looks like I will have to look for 4670 or 9600GT. BTW, would 9600GSO with 512MB or 768MB be also a good choice for me? I remember I read somewhere that it's pretty much the same as HD4670 while 9600GT is a bit faster.

Oh boy, that Asrock motherboard brings back tons of nostalgic memories! wubsmiley.gif That board was able to overclock my Opteron 165 to 2.9GHz rock-solid stable! biggrin.gif

Anyways, where is your location and what is your budget? This will make it much easier to make recommendations for you.

I'm based in Eastern Europe so I'm afraid it won't help you a bit. But so you could have some point of reference, a couple of prices in my country: 9600GT is usually $40-$50 while HD4670 is around $30. A brand new HD6670 (1GB, DDR5) is $90-$95. A used one can be bought for $60 if you lucky enough. That's how it looks here more or less. And my budget is $50 maximum. But I forgot to ask about yet another GPU that I found yesterday - HD4770. I read a bit about it over Internet and it seems to be slightly faster than 9600GT while using less power. It costs about that same as 9600GT (well a bit more actually - $55 usually) but unfortunately is very rare. Also I'm not sure whether it won't be too fast for my cpu (assuming that I will hit 2.5GHz stable within reasonable temps)? But on the other hand, it's always better to have a faster GPU than a bit too slow - or it isn't?

Go for the HD4670, its the cheapest and provides a big enough jump in performance.
No sense really in getting the HD6670 or HD4770 unless you plan on upgrading the cpu too.
Anything less than a 3ghz dualcore will bottleneck those two.

I had an x1650pro AGP and HD4650, I can tell you its a big gap in speed,
so the HD4670 will be an even bigger jump.

As for the games you were asking.
FEAR 2 will be easily maxed out. Look at the fear benchmark with HD4670 http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-gtx-radeon,2326-10.html
STALKER runs like crap even on my HD6850, its a terribly coded game, unless you get the STALKER complete 2009 mod.
I havent played ARMA so I cant comment on that.

Test some games after you get the card so we can estimate what kind of overclock would be enough
to relieve some bottleneck.

Yeah, I think you're right. I need to get 4670 and test it with my cpu. Only then I will be able to tell whether it's fast enough or too slow. As for dual core cpu - I don't think I will need it since most DX9 games cannot use them anyway (Stalker being a good example). Let's hope that playing on such a low resolution won't stress my cpu too much.

Get these complete mods for stalker
http://www.moddb.com/mods/stalker-complete-2009
it fixes all the bugs while not changing anything about the quests/missions.
If you scroll to the bottom, you will find they also have that mod for Clear Sky and Pripyat.

First time I played STALKER was with a Sempron LE-1150 2.0Ghz.
I think your cpu is a bit faster than the AM2 sempron, so overclocking that opteron to 2.5 or 2.7ghz should be good enough.

I replayed the stalker series earlier this year and 4 of my cores had 0% usage.
core1 had the highest usage so I assume thats for STALKER, core2 had low usage, probably windows processes.
