Repo FINALLY gets new hardware (leaving the Q6600 finally, hah) HAF 932, Sabertooth, CPU TBD! - Page 4

Hey long time no speak.

Nice that you got some newer hardware, I'm happy for you... but honestly I think a Q6600 is much better than an Athlon II X4. wink.gif I don't think the Athlon even has L3 cache. The single thread on the Q6600 is better too. At least with that motherboard you can upgrade to an AM3+ chip. Piledriver is still weaker than anything Intel in single thread, but the upside is they overclock crazy. You also get better multi thread over an i5. A lot of people knock Piledriver but the single thread on it is actually better than a Phenom II, Piledriver can game just as well as Phenom II, and at much higher clocks.

Do you think you will keep the Sabertooth and get an FX chip, or will you sell the board and go Intel?

Neuro! Good to see you bro-ski! Yea, the Q6600 and the AMD chip feel about the same to me in the OS. This is simply a chip to tide me over right now. A friend had it just sitting in his closet. So it saved me having to buy a processor. I'm definitely keeping the Sabertooth for now. I'll be in the market for a 6 or 8 core AMD chip in the future (maybe in the next month or so) and a GPU. I'll probably end up going back to Intel one day, but for now, this AMD setup is much cheaper (which is what I wanted, lol). I'm putting most of my available cash into my car these days. tongue.gif

I just replaced my q6600 with a fx 6300. Very happy with it so far. Gonna take one of the 7950 from the 3770k and do some benches
post #35 of 39
FX-8320. Do it. Overclock that sucker to 4.7ghz or more. You'll definitely notice a difference if you run benches before and after. But, you'll still lose out to Intel chips.

Going Intel with an equivalent overclocking capability on the motherboard would cost me close to $800. The Crosshair V was $150 refurbished and the FX-8350 was $200. $350 is a lot better than $800, and I beat everything but an overclocked i7 in synthetic benchmarks.

Wow, I think I would never be able to last that long. Don't get me wrong Q6600 were amazing for their time. But up to this date? I could never.

Repo congrats on the upgrade. I would def go with a 8320 and a nice Nvidia card. thumb.gif

I wouldn't go nvidia. The only reason to go Nvidia is if you're getting a Titan or (maybe) a 780.

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/768?vs=829

7970 Ghz Edition beats every Nvidia card besides Titan/780. You can get a 7970 Ghz on Newegg for about $350 now. Compare that to $600 for the 780 and $1000 for Titan.

AMD also still has roughly double the raw compute power because of GCN, so if you're into folding, it's better for that too (at least with a 7970).

Even in the mid tier, sub $300 range, a 7950 can often be had for less than a GTX 760, and outperforms it. If you overclock the 7950 to crazy levels (which is more than possible) it chews up the 760.

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/856?vs=854

I even saw a Sapphire 7950 for $219 on sale on Newegg. The 760 is $250.

I'm not an AMD fan boy- if Nvidia had better price/performance I'd buy an Nvidia card for sure. I'd certainly do an Intel i7 in my system too if I could afford it. However, I have been building pcs and keeping up with GPU technology for years and the one thing I've noticed since 2008 is that Nvidia is generally better by far if you buy their highest end, bleeding edge cards, and AMD is better price/performance wise in the low end and mid end spectrums. If you can afford $1000 for the very best, do it. However, it took me a few months of saving just to get my 7970. Not everyone is made of money.
