Hi all, this was an idea given to me whilst looking for ideas for my "Extreme Gaming PC ~ $5000" Please feel free to comment and leave suggestions. This rig will be used for CAD work and the folding while not being used. It will be housed in a CaseLab's TX10 along with my extreme gaming rig on the other side. Estimated to put out 200k-800k PPD:

$550 - 4x AMD Opteron 61xx CPUs (Ebay ~$125 - 175 per cpu)
$658 - Supermicro H8QGi+-F AMD Quad G34 Socket Motherboard (New)
$60 - 16x Micron or Hynix ECC 1GB DDR3 1333 or 1600 (Cas 9 v1.5) (Used MAC DIMMs on Ebay $3 -$4)
$100 - 850W GOLD PSU (Prefer Corsair or Seasonic w/ 3yr - 5yr Warranty)
$136 - 4x Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo
$10 - Zalman’s Super Thermal Grease (STG)
$20 - Misc Hardware for board & CPU Cooler mounting
$ 1534 - Approx Bargain AMD G34 4P

Dont get 61xx's as a rule tongue.gif get at the min 62xx 16 core or if money permits 63xx 16core

the 6272 i have are about 10% slower than same speed 63xx, so i am assuming the 61xx are 10% ish slower than the 6272's

Look at my sig rig/Ragnarok build thread for idea's its not quad CPU but similiar style build as mine is for gaming too but please note the ONLY game i have found to use over 8 cores is Metro Last Light, i have found nothing that'll use both CPU yet.

Regarding your memory 1600 will be better just note its ECC Registered NOT FB-DIMM

If the price is right I would say that a 61xx isn't that bad a deal... I posted an e-bay deal for 6128 processors for $30 each... so a significant savings on the up front cost. Yes there's a little less PPD so if OP wants the higher PPD than they can spend the money for 63xx processors but from a budget standpoint sometimes the 61xx series is tough to beat. As for memory, if the mobo supports non-ecc memory than just find the cheapest sets you can (try to match of course for stability & troubleshooting ease). you shouldn't need more than 16gb unless the CAD program you use requires more.

I can't wait to see the build log! thumb.gif

According to the boards manual it supports "Thirty-two (32) single/dual/tri/quad channel DIMM slots supporting up to 256 GB of ECC/Non-ECC UDIMM or up to 1 TB of ECC RDIMM DDR3 1600/1333/1066 Mhz SDRAM" What do you guys think would be the best memory option?
it will accept non ECC memory BUT if its anythign like my board, you'll be limited to the GB size per dimm (not that you'd be worried if you just use 1 or 2GB dimm's)

Is it safe to assume that 16GB would suffice? Lol. So any 1600 memory will work?

Check the particular board you are going to order and check what RAM configurations are allowed with it from the manual. Some boards only support certain sized DIMMs in each slot for different total amounts of memory. For instance we have some dell servers with 6x total RAM slots, the max on the board is 16GBs. To run 16GBs you have to have 4x 4GB sticks and leave the last 2 DIMM channels open.
