Cisco - Changing Subinterface Name/Reference

Thread Starter
Are there any easy ways of changing a subinterface name? The issue is largely aesthetic but we're just looking to have all of our sites to be consistently labeled.

The issue occurred on a frame relay circuit migration for a site. The existing DLCI on the previous circuit overlapped with the DLCI on the new circuit. We were able to add a secondary IP and get this going with a cable swap between circuits at this site, but the subinterface does not match the DLCI number as intended (IE s0/0/0.1 instead of s0/0/0.200).

Since you can't assign identical DLCI numbers between other subinterfaces, is there a non-intrusive way of changing this descriptor value? I don't have access to console on site so any sort of circuit outages would be effectively killing connectivity to the site until they can reboot the device.

Thanks!

are you trying to just add a description to the interface? or are you trying to set the subinterface s0/0/0.1 to s0/0/0.200 to match the other end?

do you have cisco packet tracer? you could set up a similar situation and test the outcomes with something that is not in production. if you need a download, i could get one for you

It's more of a renaming the subinterface instead of a description.
I appreciate the software offer smile.gif I do have a stack of Cisco 1841s here and a test circuit though.

The only real challenge is that there are no technical resources at this site so it has to be done remotely (without killing the connection). My Cisco-IOS-fu is reasonable but figured someone may know of some crazy (or maybe blatantly obvious/simple) workaround.

How about aliases?, could set the alias to the interface you wnat it to be called which would make yping easier, (but i gues thatsbad as the conf would output the old name and not the alias)
