Confusing Upgrade Path

Hello All,

I will be in the market for a new CPU/Mobo combo very soon as I'm still using my i7-920 and it is finally starting to show it's age after 5 or so years of faithful service. However, I'm confused about what the best step forward is. I understand that IB-e is launching soon and that it is going to use the old x79 chipset and the 2011 socket type. I like that it supports quad channel memory and has 10mb of L3 cache for the 4820k. I also know that Haswell recently launched. What I don't know is what distinct advantages Haswell offers over IB-e, if any. Also, I've read that Haswell-e will launch at some point next year and will be the x99 chipset, socket 2011-3, and support DDR4.

Now, I know that if you sit around waiting for the new tech to release before upgrading you will be waiting forever because there is always new tech on the horizon. But, I honestly don't know what the best route to go it. I try not to do a full overhaul but every 5 or so years. I may do incremental upgrades like GPUs or a new mobo. But, I honestly want to get the CPU and mobo combo that will give me the most life and the best performance long-term. I could honestly get another year or more of service out of my current setup before games get too advanced and won't play. But, I'm getting the upgrade bug and it won't go away.

Lastly, my goal (if I don't wait for Haswell-e) is to reuse everything except my Mobo and CPU. My RAM is pretty fast, GPUs are adequite, and all others have little to no bearing on performance.

smile.gif tl;dr = What is the upgrade path for intel that will give me the best long term performance. smile.gif

Thank You in advance!

Wouldn't just Haswell be fine then?

If its for gaming you have no need for Ivy-E or Haswell-E whatsoever. Unless you're looking for something absolutely unnecessary like 4x 780's, then Haswell has what you need. Even if you were to go dual 780's, each at 8x, there would be no drop in performance whatsoever as PCI-E 3.0 has so much available bandwidth. Si CE you're maintaining your current graphics setup then "only" having 16-lanes of PCI-E 3.0 literally means nothing for the time being. Once you finally do decide to upgrade, current top-tier or even next gen GPU's will still be 100% fine at 16x 3.0 or 8x/8x.

Aside from epeen - gaming wise - there's going to be no legitimate return from either 2011 option over a 4770K.

Also....imagine what you could do with that extra money wink.gif.

Best of luck with your decision man!
