You guys stated it would achieve around 60 fps, which I find is hard to believe.

The reviews I've seen have 780's playing Far Cry well above 30 fps. Not sure about crysis though.

I posted that Far Cry 3 gets just under 60fps, which it does. Check out Anandtech GPU Bench. Its crysis that gets like 30fps at 1440p with everything on.

Crysis 3 would not play at 60 FPS; probably, 40-43 fps OC'ed on 1440p with a 780. I did a recent benchmark on my GTX 770 setup, and this was the result on 1440p, highest settings @ x2SMAA (just to show you how demanding Crysis 3 can be at that resolution). Even with OC'ed 770 SLI, i can't get 60 FPS avg. From my experience in Crysis 3, SMAA is the best AA solution, and x2SMAA is very very similar in FPS to FXAA. TBH, i don't think running with no AA at all on 1440p would be nice visually. People would say it is, but i don't believe it.
Warning: Proof (Click to show)

If i were you, this is what my options would be like.

1: Get either 770 SLI or 7970 X-fire now, and get a 1440p monitor (not spending too much, but get playable FPS with AA in demanding games)

2: Get single 780 and play without AA in demanding games on 1440p (upgrade later to 780 SLI and get awesome gaming experience on 1440p with High/Extreme AA)

3: Get either 770 SLI or 7970 X-fire with a 144hz 1080p monitor, and get the most fluid gaming experience you can get out there (even in 3D with Highest AA settings)

4: Get single 780 and 1080p 144Hz monitor. Also get fluid gaming experience, but lower AA amount and No 3D in demanding games. (SLI and MAX any game out there for the next 2-3 years while maintaining 60 FPS AVG)

The games I play mostly consist of hitman, skyrim with some mods, far cry 3, just cause 2, battlefield 3 (probably also 4) and some of the call of duty games. I'm not super enthusiastic about Crysis 3 as the reviews weren't that good. Mayble metro last light though. The reason I'm not directly going with the most tempting 770 sli option is that I feel like in 2 years or so it will be outdated for max settings, while I can add another 780 in a few years (for lesser cost than now) and result in better future proof-nes(?)

Edit: I'm also sorry that this thread has gone into a gpu based topic

Also, this was what I was asking: 1080p 144hz with max settings, or 1440p higher resolution with less than max settings?

Just found out about the price drop on the 7990, really considering it.

Just found out about the price drop on the 7990, really considering it.

Firstly, there is a difference between Max in-game settings and Max AA. The 770 SLI WILL NOT be outdated for MAX settings for the next 2-3 years, but it will be outdated for MAX AA (Anti Aliasing) though. You might end up running at SMAA, FXAA, x2/x4 MSAA, or TXAA (depending on how demanding the games at that time will be) on 1080p/1440p.

Secondly, (coming from a 120hz 1080p user) if i were you, and i did not care about 3D, i would get a 1440p monitor and overclock it to 90Hz, but it all comes down to GPU selection. If you go with a single 780 now, you would get low performance in demanding games @ 1440p (at least 30-35% lower than 770 SLI/7970 X-fire), and you would be forced to buy another 780 sooner than you can imagine, probably due to un-pleasant visuals, or unplayable FPS. However, if you go with 770 SLI or 7990/7970 X-fire, you will run all your games on max settings, with low/high AA, and be able to maintain Great FPS, but upgrading a 770 SLI or 7970 X-fire system will require you to sell both GPU's and go with something more powerful in future.

BTW: (just a thought) You can go with a 7990 6gb due to it's nice price drop, and when you need more gpu power, you can go Quadfire 7990's (if you have the PSU to power it) biggrin.gif. A single 7990 will be great for 1440p, and Quad will be bliss wink.gif

When I mean maxing out a game, I mean both the texture settings and anti aliasing. I was taking Crysis 3 as a benchmark as it is definitely not the game I'll be playing. Your second point is what I was thinking, I would very much like a dual 770/7970 setup but I feel like its a limit of upgrading. The problem at hand was:

A 770 SLI setup is awesome these years, but not later on. A single gpu 780 setup isn't great now, but with a second card later will be great. I feel like the 7990 is the solution. Single gpu (atleast thats the space it takes up), also lots of power. I feel like the 7990 is my best option.

Yup i believe so, 7990 should be your best bet, when you look at all the variables. wink.gif
