FX8350 Upgrade Or Not?? - Page 2

you could always do a lesser upgrade with a 6300 or 6350 and buy a used motherboard (970 chipset as you already have a 7850, you probably wouldnt need the sli capabillity)
One weak core is still a core. FX-8xx0 are octocores.

@OP. If you are happy with your system, stay put. If nevertheless you want to take advantage of the market value your cpu/mobo hold, go ahead and get an FX-8320 or FX-8350, it will be a nice jump.

It will also consume less power and have quite improved IPC with single threaded performance gaining significantly. Add in even 10% or so software changes and you will have a killer little chip. It's coming and I'll be there with my money.

It won't be till around November that we will know if AMD will be going for an AM3+ steamroller, so it isn't a dead socket yet. I am patiently waiting. Unless you need more multithreaded performance now, wait and save the dough for the new hotness. No reason to spend the money if you don't need it. Also, even though the new consoles are 8 cores, they are weak compared to their desktop compadres... One edit. It irks me that people complain about the modules. For those that are smart enough to type a legible sentence please look at a picture. For every module there are how many physical cores. Oh yeah, two. They are called modules due to the fact that two cores share resources, and the two cores are paired. two cores... Come on, put on your big boy or big girl pants and get over it. If you don't like it, buy Intel, they want your money at a premium profit....

I dont need more multi threads but looking for more horse power for the future to compete with next gen consoles.
I say AM3+ is a dead socket cause it is, and there will be no steam roller cpu's released on am3+.
There was a amd press release on xbitlabs forums and anandtech forums stating that the fx9000 series of chip would be the last for that socket and steam roller will be released on a new socket.
Only Kaveri showing as the only steam roller part for desktop release.
That being only a quadcore part just like the 6800k is now.
This made me very uneasy all the sudden, but not to worry as I am still happy with my current set up and didnt plan on parting with it.
I have that spare 6800K still factory sealed that I bought and its just collecting dust since I am using my 750K instead, so I just figured I could return the 6800K to newegg and exchange it for the fx8350 for the same price I got the 6800K for seeing how the fx8350 is on sale for $170 plus I have a 15% discount on any item of my choice.
So..... I guess I could hold off for a while but time is ticking on the return/exchange of my 6800K to newegg...
Before I get flamed to death here is the link for you all to read...

JB, I wouldn't worry about the fact that Kaveri won't be an 8 core part, as it will be optimized for the games that AMD now "own". Which is basically all of them since the consoles are going full AMD, not to mention that they will be x86 coded FINALLY! We will see the FX chips gain on Intel in that regard, but even the modest 30% gain that Kaveri will come with, GCN cores, partial HSA/hUMA, and probably around 10-20% software coding optimization, you will be staring at a 4 core 8350 CPU wise. The 30% part isn't a stretch, as we already know that is pretty well set in stone with IPC and resource modifications, but the software bit is to be seen. I am an optimist, and I know AMD won't win against Intel without the software bit, but we have seen massive players jump onboard the HSA/hUMA train, so that won't be a stretch either, it will just take time. I say return the 6800K now and get the refund, or save it and try to get a higher OC out of it than the 750K... You can't turn off the iGPU, but you can turn the power down to a point of non-issue, and use a dedicated GPU!

I'm not sure if Kaveri's core performance will be one par with that of an 8350's, also Kaveri comes with full HSA support, it's the software side that needs to catch up and that can take time.
You sure that the 30% gain is over PD and not BD?
Anyway, i've decided to wait too.

OP it is up to you really, the FM2 you have will be fine for games. I would not say AM3+ is dead yet, has it be confirmed by AMD?

first off, the 8350 IS a 8 core, with shared resources, which means it has 8 physical cores.

second, for the OP, while the 8350 is an upgrade for you, i would either hold off until amd release something better soon, or hop the pond to intel. if you are gaming, there are few games that use the power of amds 8 cores, since a lot of games are coded for high single and dual threaded performance. however with the ps4 and xb1 on the horizon that might change.

want to upgrade now and not have to worry about performance? 4770k or 4670k. want to wait and see what amd has to offer? their new apu's and promises of steamroller look good.

Yes it has been confirmed from amd!!
Here is the link of the link http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2335144

I will just wait for now guys, and return the 6800K for some extra cash or credit.
I guess I will get me a FM2+ K series cpu when they are released.
I hope that they are really 30% stronger then current amd offerings.
So Agrims, will this 30% performance boost be in the cpu power or the igpu power or both??
I would kill for a 30% performance boost in the cpu side alone since I use a discrete graphics card and really dont give a hoot or haa about integrated graphics this or that .
And no I wont jump ship to intel because they are about to do the same thing as amd as in they are releasing a new socket yet again for there upcoming 8c/16t cpus.

thats for a different arcitecture/ socket than their latest cpu.

the latest is haswell, the 4770k. socket 1150.

they are releasing the ivy bridge e, which came out a while ago, just adding 2 more cores to it. so no they arent abandoning their 4770k to work on something older smile.gif
