Time to upgrade my dying I7 920?

Thread Starter
Hi,
My system is: I7 920 (stepping 4), rampage 2 extreme, 12GB ram, HD7970 oced and 750w corsair psu. My monitor is Dell u2913wm (res 2560 X 1080, 21:9).
The CPU clock is 3.7GHZ, 1.32V runs like this for 4.5 years 24/7 without stuff like C1E etc to reduce clock and volts.

I still can play all the new games at high-ultra settings but in some games like FC3, BF3 MP conquest 64 people the fps isn't stable. When I'm going out of the base and looking at a big areas of the map the fps drops to 5X-35FPS it almost never stay stable at 60FPS when I'm out of the base. The GPU usage is around 65-70% all the time (high settings, msaax2) and never goes to 9X%. Although it can get to 99-100% usage at benchmarks or with ultra settings and MSAAX4. I had another HD7970 and the usage was the same. Here is a some stats of the cpu and gpu after BF3 MP:

The strange part to me is that my CPU is also around 50% usage and never goes to 9X% of usage. Is it normal? Or is the CPU is "dying"? Because it seems that it's only getting worse few months ago this issue wasn't so noticeable and I don't remember getting fps below 45 and a few more months back when I had a FHD display I was getting more than 60FPS all the time.
Lowering the settings to low and res to FHD resolution helps the FPS stability but there still noticeable drops (the usage drops below 50%).
So is the CPU is the bottleneck causing the problem although it's never even close to be fully used?

If it's the cpu, will the 4770k @ 4.5ghz+- be enough for me? Considering my res that increase the FOV of all game at about 31% because of the 21:9 ratio.
Or do I have to get an I7 extreme 6 core for stable fps with my setup?
Is there any information about the I7 4820k that is coming next month and how it's compered to 4770k?

Have you updated your GPU drivers?

Is your CPU dying? I do not believe so. this is just the performance of 1st gen intel i7s running at 3.7ghz. my brother has a i7 870 running at 3.5ghz and he is having similar issues as you are experiencing. he also has the GTX 770 OC which should be able to kill BF3 at 1080p but again. i noticed some lag / stutter every now and then when i play on his computer.

Is your CPU the issue of your FPS drop? I believe so.
Would the 4770k be any better than the 920? Absolutely. The higher your resolution, the more data gets sent from the GPU to be processed in the CPU. That being said ... the better your CPU the better results you get.

Is it worth getting a 6 core i7 to play games (even at your 2560 x 1080)? I will have to say no. because 90% of today's games dont require more than 4 cores to run.

I hope this gives you an idea. good luck.

PS. run CPU benchmarks, or re-run prime95 for extended period of time to make sure your OC is stable.

Your system is fine. The problem lies with the games being terrible console ports cross platform disasters and running a monitor that effectively puts more polygons on your screen than is normal for its pixel count.

Remember, a 7970 isn't top of the line. It may be a great single card, but there is still the whole world of multi-gpu ahead of you. You could also try squeezing some more juice out of that CPU. If you aren't getting close to maxing any of the cores, it shouldn't really matter, but most 920s can get at least a little higher on water.

I might be biased as I run a 920 to but I'm with Zero on this one. Granted I don't play BF3 but so far my 920 @ 4.0 GHz has taken pretty much everything I have thrown at it. The only game out of all the +130 games I have that had some issues was Planted Side 2 and that runs more or less like crap on pretty much all systems.

I run a 920 too at 3.86 Ghz. I seldom play BF3 MP and there are sudden frame drops for me as well. Game's fault, not your CPU.
