Also, on a more serious note, I have the z77a version of the MSI G45 Gaming motherboard, and its great, definitely worth trying.

Thank you, Shurtugal. I will look at that mobo as well. Something tells me this is not going to be an "in and out" trip to Fry's.

I'm running a P9X79 WS in my own system, although I'm not crazy about the placement of the HD Audio header and lack of USB ports on the motherboard, I do prefer the subdued heatsink arrangement. I'm not a big fan of the colored bling-bling motherboard styling.

Greg

Thank you, hammong. The WiFi is not needed but I do like the dual Intel Ethernet. I just checked and that mobo is also available at my local Fry's. I am going to be driving a clerk crazy pulling all these mobo's for me to check out.

EVGA motherboards have had consistently horrible BIOS implementation. I would not recommend them to anyone.

1. It is an EATX mobo which would require a new case and I only need two X16 PCIe slots for dual GPU SLI.

2. It costs $400.00 and my max budget is $350.00

I went to Fry's and while checking out the MSI and Giga mobos I was talking to the Fry's guy. He said that they had a X79 Sabertooth display model that they were selling as an open box item for $250.00. He let me look at it and I bought it. I got as far as getting the CPU and HSF installed tonight. I have the family and job commitments this week, so I am probably not going to get much more done until next weekend. Thanks again to each of you for your input.

It depends on the case, if you have enough room for the board to be inside your case, you can fit it. Seen many E-ATX motherboards inside a ATX only chassis smile.gif Could cause problems with motherboard tray cutout though smile.gif

That being said, i have not had any success with EVGA motherboards and therefore i cannot recommend them. Specially the BIOS was a big disappointment, huge delay, fail boot, hard time reading CPU Fan RPM - multiple random reboots. EVGA Stinger was the old board i used in my LAN Rig - now switched to ASUS and it works like a charm smile.gif

Well I certainly can not speak to this new release, I would have to think you can not either.
Unless of course they sent you a review sample and by all mean please enlighten us.
From what I have read they scrapped everything and built this from the ground up including a new BIOS.
That being said will this board just be another failed attempt at an x79 solution as I do agree if so just say no.
However I think we owe them the benefit of the doubt as they have had great boards over the years on other platforms.

So as of now I can not state that anyone they should buy it blindly, However I can recommend that it may be worth looking into.
Who knows they may have an awesome board here and it does represents the small amount of newer x79 releases.
I am hopeful with IB-E hitting the streets In a month we see other boards become available for all the usual suspects.
For now this board is all I have read about.

At the OP, yea they are asking a lot for it and it is to early to tell if it is in fact worth the price of admission, just wanted to make you aware a new board for this platform has been released and as stated the jury is still out, will it be a POS or will it be decent or will it be the most sought after x79 board this year, only time will tell

The x79 Sabber is a solid board and I am sure it will take you where you are going

Best of luck with the new build

I have an Antec Eleven Hundred for a case at this time. The reason I have this case is because my youngest nephew bought an EVGA Z77 FTW and it would not mount in the case. He did not want to go through the time and return shipping expense of RMAing it back to the egg and offered to sell it to me for the refund price minus shipping. So I do know that EATX is not an option with this case.

@Witchdoctor

I agree that those of us without samples can say whether the X79 Dark is a "gotta have" or a "Danger Will Robinson". Only time will tell. I do agree with the posts stating that EVGA's bios for Z68, Z77 and thus far X79 have fallen way short of the target. I had a Z68 SLI and while getting the CPU OC'd to 4.5 was cumbersome, OCing the RAM was a whole new exercise in futility. It is my opinion that EVGA needed to change the "save and exit" setting to "exit and roll the dice". I could take my CPU and Samsung wonder RAM out of the Z68 SLI and install them in my nephew's P67 Asus mobo and OC the CPU to 4.8 with a little bit less Vcore than the Z68 SLI at 4.5 and OC the RAM to 2133 @ 9-11-10-28 1t Prime stable for eight hours. If I set the ram above 1866 on the Z68 SLI, it would not boot and I would have to reset the CMOS and start over. The other thing that totally annoyed me was settings would rarely save when shut down and restarted later. The Z77 bios was even worse. If I remember correctly they have released over 40 bios revisions for X79, and the X79 Dark is a totally new bios. While I have never had a problem with EVGA's GPU's, I have had nothing but problems with their mobo's. So many that I will more than likely not purchase another. I really, really miss Abit.

I am optimistic that the Sabertooth will deliver what I need in this build. I have only used an Asus mobo in one other build and that was in 2004. Hopefully minimal luck will be needed with this build and I can save it for finding a Z77 mobo for my 2500k. Yeah, the Z68 SLI died. Like my Gramps used to say :If it is not one thing it is a half a dozen others." biggrin.gif Thank you for your input. +1
