Why do you want/need to lap it???

If your running really high odd temps first try to re-seat you HSF...

Lapping IHS is last resort... First try your HSF if anything...

By the way:
CPU = IHS
Heatsink = HSF

Your going to want to use 400 grit, 800 grit, 1200 grit, 1600 grit, 2000 grit, and possibly Micron 5/10/20/40 and whatnot...

I'd at least do 400-1600, really recommend 400-2000 or more

Its not gonna get you a higher overclock. It can drop your load temps by 3-4 degrees celsius...which will give you piece of mind about upping your volts a little bit for the possibility of gaining a slightly higher overclock.

I lapped my Zalman, I used 320, 400, 600, 800, 1200, and 1600 grit wet/dry sandpaper.

Very shinny.

Well like I said earlier
Your going to want to use 400 grit, 800 grit, 1200 grit, 1600 grit, 2000 grit, and possibly Micron 5/10/20/40...

More the better, if you want good results do at least 400-2000 grits and the Micron 5/10/20/40 are even finer...

If your really want to lap you IHS, make sure you take a detailed picture of it before sanding any, and write down the info, you might need it later...

I'm sure you are aware or the fact that lapping the CPU IHS is going to void your warranty if it still has one, so if you want your warranty cross this off your list

For best results lap the HSF and IHS, and then use a good thermal compound like AS5, you should see a fancy drop in your load temps, and an extreme difference in idle temps...

Hope I Helped

Lower temps usually equal a higher overclock but I'd take the IHS off personally.

I took a look at your specs. It seems you are using your stock cooler?

IMHO you may want to heed frogy's advise. Start with reseating the HSF. Try lapping the HSF only first. If that does not yield the desired resluts, move on to the IHS.

Lapping the IHS will VOID YOUR WARRANTY. ...sorry for speaking in such a loud tone of voice, but you should understand that in no uncertain terms.

Paper: 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1200, 1500, 2000, 2500

Those would be considered the normal range. For the most part if you go to 1200 you will be good to go.

If you have a particularly warped HS, you might have to run something lower (lower grit) just to get the HS footprint level.

Lapped surfaces require less AS5 and take twice as long to cure. Take that into consideration.

Good Lcuk!

Lap on a glass or mirror.

And lastly... although you did not mention it, you might want to start investigating some aftermarket coolers.
