Overclocker needing help understanding (OC) On Intel Motherboard boxes

Hello, I'm Looking at overclocking another computer just got rid of my old 3rd gen computer (I like to rebuild a new computer every year because its fun, i build semi beastly computers (normally 2 video cards instead of all 4) So i can build a nice rig, use it for 6-8 months, then sell it and start over. I love building computers but i have a quick question.

Over the years i have used many different motherboards.
Currently i'm on my in-between computer that i use between building new rigs im using an Asus Sabretooth X58 motherboard and it only shows that it supports up to 1866mhz sticks of RAM, my current motherboard im buying The G1 Sniper M5 (because of the color, LED, and theme of the Level 10 GT Battle edition case) i was wondering that on the box it showed that it supports ram modules up to 1600, then 1866+ in (OC) Which id assume means that you can overclock the ram sticks up to those speeds, up to 3000 (oc). If i am wrong please correct me. I want to know if i will be able to use 2133mhz or 2400mhz sticks instead.

On the X58 motherboard im using now it supports up to 1866mhz sticks but i current have 16gb of 2133mhz sticks in. So if it doesn't show that it works on the box, why am i able to use the sticks, even if it does downclock them. Should i just stick with the 1600 sticks if im going to be overclocking my 4670k to 4.6+ anyways? (since when you overclock the proc that high it drops your RAM sticks down). I just want to know before i purchase sticks because im looking at the dominator Platinum series sticks i love how they look and i heard they are really reliable.

Thank you for the help! Any explanation would be great. if the motherboard will run 2400 i would like to being using the fastest available ram sticks possible without having to overclock them and making them heat up more than necessary. Thanks again!!

The specs of the new computer will be

Motherboard - G1 Sniper M5 micro ATX Overclocking board,
Case - Level 10 GT Battle Edition by Thermaltake
2 ASUS GTX 770 OC - Video cards
16 GB (either 1600 if thats as fast as the board will clock to, or as fast as possible) Dominator Platinum Series by Corsair
Intel 4670k Overclocked to at least 4.6 (i know all procs are different and some might suck to overclock hoping to get an average one biggrin.gif)
100i CPU water cooling system for the proc
Corsair 850AX powersupply

http://download.gigabyte.ru/memory/mb_memory_g1.sniper-m5.pdf

looks like it supports:
CMD16GX3M4A2400C10 (dominator platinum 4gb sticks 2400)
CMD16GX3M4A2800C11 (dominator platinum 4gb sticks 2800)

So you should be good to go. It seems to max out at 2933 only verified with one brand:
F3-2933C12Q-16GTXDG (G.skill trident-x, current world record holder for highest clocked ram)

I think you would be happy with either. But the sticks you currently have are probably being downclocked by the x58, you would probably be happy with them once you moved them over to the new board, which ram are you currently using?

4gb sticks of 2133 Gskill sniper. its ok but i dont like how they are black and red. trying to stick with the black/green/silver theme of the case, i know its retarded but its part of the fun of building the PC. I was going to go with the dominators for the color scheme, and unfortunately they dont make Pure blackor green trident X sticks frown.gif..

And the big question i really have is that it seems that board downclocks sticks to 1600mhz when you overclock intel past 4.2/4.3ghz. IF i was going for 4.6 (could go higher but i dont see the point for performance past this point) if i had 2400mhz sticks would they just downclock to 1600, or do you think i would be able to get at least stock 2400mhz performance out of them

yeah I am not sure why it does it but you should be able to overclock and run your ram at 2400 at the same time. Must be something wrong with the motherboard or something

Don't waste your money on the Dominator as youccan get more capable memory for less, specifically the Trident X 2400 9-11-11-31 1T, 2666 10-11-11-34, or the Ripjaws Z 2133 9-11-10-28 or 2400 9-11-11-31. All four kits are exceptional OC-ers, for example I'm currently running 4x4GB RJZ 2133 9-11-10-28 @ 2584 10-12-10-26 1T on my X79 rig, and 2x4GB Trident X 2400 9-11-11-31 1T @ 2824 10-12-12-34 1T on my Z77 (3770K @ 5.1Ghz + GA-Z77X-UP7).
I have yet to see any Dominator Platinum oc anywhere near as well in person, but every GSkill kit has been good for at least one bin higher, ffroma total of 25 kits betbetween my friend and I.
