I think it is when the computer is idling it drops the voltage to 0.9 volts as the cores aren't being used when they ramp up and cores are used it goes to 4.8 ghz and whatever I've set the voltage to. Even though ftw420 said its only a couple degrees it still saves power and your cpu doesn't have to work as hard as manual voltage. On water it is constantly trying to dissipate heat so if my idle ambient is 20c on offset and yours is 30c on manual. That's a 10c difference so the water is always kept slightly hotter. Not to mention the cpu is working slightly harder and additional voltage is wasted doing nothing.

But if i use offset running prim95 so i will have the same temp as using manual mode?

Load temps will be the same whether using offset or manual since the voltage needed for load should be around the same either way.

Offset is preferable in most ways. I use manual since I change overclocks a lot & I like to look back at screenshots to see what voltage I was using at a given clock, most people would want to save a few bucks on the power bill.
But i have seen a few posts where the user was having a lot of trouble dialling in offset, manual voltage is easier, but some guys do seem to think manual voltage is like running the processor loaded when it is at idle, & that isn't so. It does use a bit more power but not a lot more power.

Offset will just net you better temps when not fully loading the cores at less voltage. Fully loaded it probably works out the same with either.

I watched the video Asus put out about overclocking their X79 mb. It was long BUT very informative. They used either a fixed 1.41 volt or an offset with .16-.2 add on. I used the offset and found it was running too hot so I backed off to offset and .075. This is plenty to run my rig OC'd to 4.4Ghz and keep the temps below 60C when running prime95 or IBT. I have 2 360 rads (XSPC RX 360 and EX 360). I mounted the EX 360 externally in vertical to the rear of my CM HAF 932 Advanced case using the XSPC mounts and it works well. The RX 360 is mounted internally at the top. I have 6 Corsair SP120 HP fans controlled by a NZXT Sentry Mix 2 6 channel controller cooling both rads.

I played around with various settings. The rig set at 4.8Ghz with fixed volts of 1.41 will run solid at prime95/IBT temps @74C max.

The 3930k OC'd will run well BUT throws out heat. I also have 2 GTX 670s water cooled so I'm throwing some heat into the loop.

Hope this helps.

I know this thread is a bit old but I just wanted to throw my IBT results & temps out there and get some feedback. Currently have setup as follows: XSPC res/pump combo-->(1) EK-240--> 3930K--> EK-120-->780Ti-->back to res/pump...cooled by (3)Corsair SP120's...4.5GHz@1.35v, W7SP1.

Here's mine run last weekend outside a chassis on a bench with H80i at full speed stock fans.

And 4.8ghz
