Inter Server RAID single boot drive

Thread Starter
I recently got an Intel s5500BC and I'm booting off of a single SSD but have 2 300gb raptors for VM's in RAID 0 but after I set up the RAID 0 choosing a single drive as my boot device is no long available. It is probably an easy fix but I am not seeing it right now.

Also I had purchased 8GB RDIMMs for this board and apparently this board does not work with 8GB RDIMMs so does anyone know if these http://www.ebay.com/itm/LOT-OF-8-TOTAL-32GB-501534-001-HP-4GB-2RX4-PC3-10600R-MEMORY-FOR-G7-G6/130904491904?_trksid=p2045573.m2042&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D17058%26meid%3D507785529235841491%26pid%3D100033%26prg%3D7917%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D111141314584%26 will work with this board. And are they RDIMM or UDIMM.

Any help would be great. I have a build log coming but have to much on my plate to get it up yet.

Are you talking about inside the bios? Did you check under to hard drives section inside the boot menu settings? You should be able to see the hard drives priorities there.

Those are RDIMM modules per HP's website.

No once you enable the SW RAID in the bios the only thing listed under hard drive priorities is the onboard intel raid and my adaptec card. It seems that from inside the onboard RAID bios you can set one of the arrays as the boot drive but I am only trying to boot from a single drive and it will not let you select a single physical drive. Maybe I can set the boot drive as a single drive array but have been unable to figure out how to do that and do not want to try with out knowing I can for the fear of earasing the drive.

Is anyone familar with the RAID configuration of this board.

That's right. Once you enable software RAID mode, you would need to have any "single" drives configured on that RAID as JBOD and access them via an OS with the RAID driver installed. You're on the right track by suggesting that you would set that boot drive as a single drive array, and you would definitely need to reformat/reinstall it.

What server OS are you running for this project? Windows 2008R2 and Server 2012 won't work with Intel Software RAID at all, so that's probably not it. Some kind of Linux? Maybe ditch the RAID controller option entirely and use a software RAID-like solution, something like ZFS in Linux, or Storage Spaces in Windows 2012. Then you get the performance of disk striping you want, without the overhead and headaches of Intel RST software RAID, which isn't that robust and is completely unsupported on most business-grade server platforms expressly for that reason.

Any 4GB DDR3-1333 Registered ECC DIMM should work in that board. I think you need to use a Intel 6000-series chipset or higher to support 8GB+ DIMMS natively.

I'm not sure where you are getting this info from but the onboard Intel RST RAID works perfectly fine with Windows Server 2008 R2 and 2012.

I have at least 4 servers in my home lab running a RAID 1 array off the Intel RST RAID for the OS. You can also manage it inside Windows by installing the RST control panel you can download from Intel's website.

All these servers are running server grade motherboards as well. For RAID 0 and 1, the Intel RST RAID works perfectly fine. So again, not sure where you got this misinformation from but hope this clears it up. thumb.gif

Edit: I think the modules you listed earlier or the one I listed below would work fine for the board (whichever you can get for cheaper).

They are 4GB RDIMM modules. The board supports up to 4GB UDIMM or RDIMM modules per slot for a maximum of 32GB.

So after I setup the RAID 0 for my VM's how do I get the system to boot from the single SSD. As it is right now the SSD is not listed under bootable devices. As I said only the onboard RAID controller and my Adaptec controller are listed with no individual brteak down so I assume you set the boot drive inside the RAID controller BIOS.

Does the RST work with the Z77 chipset? I could have sworn that when installing 2008R2 and 2012 on my media server that the server wouldn't recognize the RAID volume, but rather only recognized the drives as JBOD. Maybe it works on the Server chipsets.

It makes no difference.... The OS does not know nor care if it is storage device presented to it is RAID or not.

I have Server 2012 on a H77 with a RST RAID1 working fine.

Apparently Intel RST which comes on consumer boards is different than Intel server RAID. I was able to create one array but after that I was unable to create another and there seemed no way to boot from the single drive with out presentinging it to the RAID controller as a logical drive or an array how ever you want to say it. Since I have an extra Adaptec 3405 I just used that to set up two RAID 0 arrays for my VM storage and Recorded Video storage (IP cameras) I also have an Adaptec 3805 with 4 3TB WD reds in RAID 5 for Media Storage. Thaniks for the help.
