All jokes aside though, girls play lots of game! They just would rather stay in the shadows so they dont get bothered. I dont blame them.
Also this "Real" gamer argument is such nonsense. In elementary school we had a computer class and Friday was game day, and everyone (girls too! shocking! ) would look forward to it and play games trying to get the highest score. This was 20 yrs ago so we had black/white games like word muncher and oregon trail and carmen san diego and tetris....the mobile games like farmville and candy crush and bejeweled are way more advanced and difficult to play than the games my class played as kids, does that mean we were not gamers? Or if you owned an atari and had those simple games does that make you less of a gamer because the games weren't demanding enough or graphically advanced enough for some kid? There are even arguments that I've seen here that someone isn't hardcore because they don't PC game or game online. Completely ignoring the fact that some people that game are younger or broke college students/graduates and may not have the means to have more than one gaming platform to choose from.
Also women in tech fields, there are many reasons why they are underrepresented. The numbers have actually shrunk too (can't find the study) from the early 90's to today. Also : http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mingte-wang/women-stem-education_b_2967180.html
(comments also provide additional context). Working in the tech field/sector half of my office is actually female and I meet many females who game (some more than me) but often times will not broadcast it to avoid unnecessary harassment/judgment. I also meet a lot of males/females that don't have the time for it anymore. In high school cliques are more divided by gender you don't see these things until you grow up. Also more conservative (politically/religious) towns/environments that encourage feminine/masculine roles do the same. I've also seen it a lot higher female representation in Asia and Europe at PC Rooms, game stores, game events.
Reminds me of this xkcd comic: http://xkcd.com/385/
