[FUD] AMD Hawaii graphics card to cost less than $600 - Page 5

yeah. AMD GCN massively improved compute architecture and performance over VLIW4 which was a weak compute architecture. Fermi was a compute monster. so obviously AMD had to concede certain perf /sq mm advantage over Nvidia which they had last generation.

Also GCN vs Kepler in terms of efficiency is a close fight. Pitcairn at 212 sq mm beats GK106 at 221 sq mm on perf / sq mm. Tahiti as a gaming compute GPU was basically a compromise. AMD could not go all out big die on a raw process. So even though Tahiti had a 384 bit memory bus which takes die size and power it did not have lots of stream processors and ROPs to utilise all that bandwidth. So it fell behind GK104 for perf/watt in gaming and was no match for GK110 which was much bigger die and lots of cuda cores and ROPs. Hawaii vs GK110 will show that GCN is definitely as efficient if not better than Kepler on perf / sq mm.

I bet ~$550 and ~25% over the 7970.

Yup, as much as I love AMD cards, I also love nVidia cards, and the 680 when it first came out, walked all over the 7970.
As said above, that was the reason they had to release the 7970GhzE and had a period when they released a new driver almost every other week which also improved the performance by a large margin.
It was actually the reason why originally I bought the 670, since at that time even the 670 was faster than the 7970 in most games.

Once the drivers improved and I got a great deal on the 7950, and realized that I got a gem of a card that I could oc to my current clocks, I was very happy with it since now my 7950 matches and sometimes beats the 680 in games, and rarely EVER loses.
And I am not trying to start a flaming war, I love both sides greed and red, I also own both cards, so this is coming from personal experience.

Good, I hope it's 500$. I don't know what's up with launching cards at 650$ like Nvidia does, I've been keeping track of gpu since the 8xxx series and as far as I know high-end single gpu were always 500$? Maybe stuff like 8800 ultra was a little bit more, but still. 650$ is ridiculous, and 1000$ is a complete joke (titan).

i completey agree with this, i find modern gpu pricing outrages, the reason i am still sitting on a msi gtx580 lightening edition, i just dont see the justification to spend $5xx on a single gpu card if its not gonna give me at least a %50 boost in performance over my oced 580

if 780 was priced at 499 or 550 it would be an insta-buy for me

Because they can? Nvidia controls the discrete gpu market. If it was flipped, you can bet AMD would be doing the same thing. Heck, they even tried it initially with the 7990.

The 780 does give you a 50% boost over a 580... sometimes 100%

I'm pretty sure almost no one expected that 7990 would be more expensive than 7970 GHz Ed CF. AMD made a big mistake with 7990 pricing. I guess they saw that 690 was relatively successful and thought that they could achieve that too. Now they have been forced to do massive price drop because it flopped hard.

THIS!!!

$500 should be the cap for single-GPU gaming cards. Those that paid $550 for 7970, $650 for 780, $700 for 8800 Ultra and $1000 for Titan is just letting these companies know they can price gouge the **** out of our niche market...pretty soon single GPU flagships are going to run $700 as a norm.

Im hoping they are just pricing aggressively. Their launch prices for the 7950 and 7970 were insane, perhaps they don't want to make the same mistake this generation.

Horrible sourcing:

"We can not name our sources."

i.e. Their "source" is absolutely not AMD since journalists love to boast they have an official source exclusively. Hence it is either:

1) Friend of a friend of a friend of a cousin of a guy who used to offload boxes in a wearhouse last year.

2) A leak inside AMD

With the bs I've heard the past few weeks, especially with the troll photos from mobile phones of a "benchmark" etc. I'd find it very likely to be 1).
