ASUS M5A990FX pro? Any good?

Thread Starter
There seems to be a lack of info/reviews about this board around the net. I'm just wondering if it's any good. Does it o/c well? Any weird f'd up bios issues? I can get it for a really good price, but it's real hard to do research when there is nothing out there. So any owners of this board, can you help me make a decision?

I don't have one myself but 2 of my friends do they don't say much about them except that they are happy with them
and they work good for them and have not had any problems.

I had an ASUS M5A990FX. Served me well until it went ka-put. Well if overclocking is what you want, the Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 (updated version of your board) is a good choice for what you want. It has 8+2 power phasing (as does the whole "Ultra-Durable" line does), a definite plus for holding a stable overclock. The revision 4.0 just came out and fixed the throttling issues on extremely overclocked eight cores. Your 1090T having a 125W will need superb cooling, but your cooler should be just fine. I have the R3.0 board, and as of now, my FX-4100 is overclocked to 4.6GHz with no throttling whatsoever. It's also cheaper and has a nice black finish: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128514&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleAdwords&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-_-pla-_-AMD+Motherboards-_-N82E16813128514&gclid=CO3Aj_---LgCFYhAMgodLk4AVw

Eh? An 8350 @ 4.5 ghz is an extreme overclock??!?!? Give it up. The UD3 rev 3 is not capable of supporting an 8XXX cpu. It is just right for a 4XXX and can maybe handle a 6XXX though.

If its Gigabyte you want , don't settle for less than the UD3 rev 4. The picture at Newegg is of the rev 3.

My buddy has an 8120 @ 4.4GHZ. Says he has zero throttling. Throttling is only an issue if you don't have adequate cooling. But yeah, I second the rev. 4.0 as they fix the throttling issues along with a beefier heatsink.

About the M5A990FX, if my board is anything to go by it's good. I have a M5A97 PRO.

IIRC it has the same phase design as my board, 6+2. Except obviously the latest AMD NB and SB chipset.

I have an overclocked Phenom II X6 1045T @ 4.0Ghz 1.344vcore. Just for your overclocking reference, it seems to do well.

I assume the newer 990FX chipset will yield greater results with overclocking.

I'm not an expert nor do I have experience with different boards, but I've used the M5A99FX PRO in my first build for nearly a year now and am quite happy with it. I did have a problem with the FSB being higher than standard on the Auto setting, but I manually set it to 200 and now it's running nicely. Also, with the original BIOS, the mouse wasn't working. A BIOS updated fixed that. Not sure if you should prefer that to it competitors, but there's nothing really wrong with it in my opinion. All in all a good MB.

What is your definition of adequate cooling? People are putting 80mm fans directly on the VRM heatsink. Others are using 120mm fans. Some are butchering their case and mounting fans behind the motherboard. And yes, the Thermalright HR-09U type 2 cuts at least 5C off the VRM temps.
All in all a lot of bother for a mediocre board with bad bios.

I'm done with my UD3 R4. The bad bios did it in.

well, he does have a custom watercooling block, so that combined with his 3 exhaust noctua fans leaves his system nice and cool. However, I'm thinking of selling my 990FXA-UD3 to a buddy (casual overclocker) and getting an ASUS Sabertooth biggrin.gif
