FX-8320 high temperature?

Thread Starter
Hi All,

It seem a bit weird when just turn on my computer and log in into windows 7 the temperature of the CPU is in the low to mid 40s.

I don't have anything running but the Turbo cores will just kicks in and stay around 3.7Ghz

When I ran IBT the highest core will run is at 3.5ghz and the highest temperature is around high 40s.

I did tried reset the mother setting back to default and it still runs the same.

this is the motherboard I am using GIGABYTE GA-970A-UD3 AM3+ AMD 970

Cooler is COOLER MASTER Seidon 120XL RL-S12X-24PK-R1 38mm Radiator High Performance All in One

Thanks in advance for the help.

The idle temperature on the vishera cpus are off. But not by that much. It sounds like you may need to reseat your cooler? usually on my 8350 i get jumpy idle between 15-30 degrees. From what I understand vishera cpu's are horrible for low temps accuracy. Due to temperatures be calculated by an algorithm rather then a temp sensor. I know the 970 series chipsets do have trouble with the 8 core lineup and the 990fxa-ud3 have alot of problems (not sure if these problems were present on the 970 series aswell). It seems strange that your idle and load temps would be almost the same though. Have you checked the sensors with another program? Maybe try hwinfo64?

Stock temperatures when not under load are not accurate and should be disregarded as false. Dont worry it is normal, that is how AMD sensors work/ or dont work for that matter smile.gif

BTW!
First thing to do when you get black box chip (k) or overclocking one is to turn off turbo core.

AMD turbo core is extremely infective while making your chip much hotter. It is in fact terrible.
In my personal experience it goes like this. Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
FX-8120 has 3.1ghz @1.285v stock speed and 4ghz turbocore @1.425v
FX-8120 @ just 3.2ghz @1.285v with TURBO core turned off will perform equally in every benchmark and real life scenario. Consdering on top of that is that your chip will be much cooler and use less power in the same time.
So to conclude... 100mhz stock clock will negate or even sometimes outperform 900mhz turbo core.

Another thing that you can observe and come to conclusion that Turbo Core is very bad and sucks is that Piledriver series FX-x3xx procesors have MUCH smaller Turbo cores then Buldozer chips.

For example FX-8150 (3.5ghz-4ghz) vs FX-8350 (4ghz-4.2ghz) ... Poor stock performance of the 8120 was because of reliance on turbo core that is terrible. Major part of the success of the piledriver is much more aggressive stock clocks and less reliance on turbo core.

so after all of that you can just turn off turbo core and try to bump your cpu even for just 100 to 500mhz it will perform much better and cooler in the same time smile.gif
post #4 of 9
yeah maybe just try upping the power and see whether the max temps increase or not. Maybe your cooler is doing so good its not hardly bringing up the temps at all tongue.gif. The above is very correct you might aswell do a minor OC and kill that evil turbo-core. And probably the unstabling power saving features that save you a massive 2 pennies an hour if your lucky

Thanks guys for all the reply. smile.gif

The temperature seems find before I did some light overclocking. Bump up to 4.0 with 4.2 turbo (fx8350 speed) everything else untouched.

Then I tried 4.3ghz with 4.7 turbo with bump in vcore to 1.385 everything else untouched. Did a few IBT test and short Prime test and seem ok with highest temp around high 50s to 60c. Then after a day or two I start to notices the turbo core stuck at 3.7ghz............which seems a bit weird.......

I am going to turn that turbo core off tonight and see what happen to the temperature. I will try monitor with other temperature programs.

I will report back.biggrin.gif

(P.S. I hope the chip is not defective, or else I have to do an exchange with amazon.com)

Yeah you should be fine. Usually turbo core just causes more problems then it does good. You will see your temps drop significantly and be able to overclock higher. Just make sure you keep it under low 60's. Fx-8xxx have a low temperature max, they say 62 is the safe max. Alot of people push to 70* though without issue. But I still keep mine under 60

After I turned off the turbo core and cool and quiet setting. The temperature drop back down to high 20s to low 30s

Vcore at 1.385 @ 4.5Ghz.
Just need to run some IBT and Prime to make sure is stable.

Thanks guys.

Why do people say that the 8 cores have really low max temperature, but the 6 cores can go a lot higher safely? It doesnt make sense to me at all because they are the exact same processor.
