Help me pick a sound card

Thread Starter
I'm looking at pciking up a Beyerdynamic 990 Pro or Custom one Pro. My only problem now is that I will like to try a sound card with it to see if it improves sound quality. I'm currently using a PC 350 and I need to use DFX to supplement the audio quality. I have a couple sound cards/amps on my mind that I want to give a shot but my finances only allows for one...lol:D.

1. Schiit Magni Headphone amp
2. Asus Essence ST

I prefer a soundcard though since it's fixed to my PC and I don't have to haul anything extra around when moving my PC. Thanks in advance!!

Were you planning on pairing the Magni with a dac, like the Modi. Since the Magni is just an amplifier it won't actually improve the sound coming out of your computer much if at all, so you would need a proper source to give you the sound quality you are after.

That aside, I would personally choose the Essence out of those choices.

The Essence ST is an audiophile soundcard, it was designed for music listening mainly...and i notice you are a gamer and you need sound processing effects, right?

I am a huge gamer, but I also like watching movies and listening to music.

I have owned both an Asus Xonar Essence ST and STX and I can tell you they both are amazing and you will not be disappointed in either model. The only difference is one is PCI and the other PCI-E.

I highly recommend both, I have been using them for years and would never look (*hear*) back to anything else.

Well, it also depends on how much importance you give to such gaming audio effects.

An alternative, is the Titanium HD which have a dedicated headphone output, not as good as the Essence stx but still nice for headphones up to 300ohms.

I'm aware of the benefits I can get in games and I want to explore that to the max but that's not all i'm looking for in a sound card. I also need it to perform when I listen to music, play videos etc...
