[Nvidia] How NVIDIA Delivered Hairier Effects for Your Favorite Games - Page 2

Calm down, it'll likely just be like borderlands PhysX where you can run it on AMD GPUs but it will run worse than on a NVIDIA GPU. Unless I missed it, no where did they say it would require an NVIDIA GPU.

It looks like TW3 will be NVIDIA optimized though, so there's that.. but there's hundreds of AMD optimized games too. *Cough* Tomb Raider.

Like I said, next-gen games need to use next-gen physics. Physx is not the answer...unless you are being paid to make it the answer.

So yes I dislike Nvidia for this but CDPR should just know better. I mean, at least the physics stuff that AMD is working on works with ALL GPU's...same with Havok and every other physics engine option out there EXCEPT Physx.

So there is no hate here...more just disappointment and biased game development.

I see what you mean, but you have to realize that the Havok physics engine is actually quite lackluster compared to PhysX. So that's not an option. Same with all of the other open source physics engines. Yeah, I wish PhysX wasn't Nvidia only, but if you want to see this sort of stuff implemented in an open sourced physic engine, then those said devs need to kick it up into high gear to match PhysX.

Yeah, it could be CDPR... however, the idea also could have been Nvidia's. CDPR may have been looking for ways to improve the look of their game and being that they've partnered with Nvdia before (Witcher 2), perhaps they sought out their opinion on special effects and advanced features that Nvidia could help them implement through the Way It's Meant to be Played program. It's been known that through these special programs, coders from Nvidia (or AMD for Gaming Evolved) help in the games code. I highly doubt Nvidia would say "Hey, I'm going to help you code some physics in OpenCL or DirectCompute so that everyone can enjoy it", rather than "Hey, let's use our Physx engine for some exclusive effects that only Nvidia users can enjoy which will help sell our products."...

It's frustrating because I want to enjoy The Witcher 3 to it's fullest, but I do not want to buy an Nvidia GPU and support their Physx crap...

Having hair physics like that calculated on CPU would cripple game-play I would think. Even in Borderlands 2, it was crippling at times, especially since Physx code is x87 which is not exactly ideal for a CPU...

Tomb Raider only had a head-start on AMD, where it performed better out of the gate... Once Nvidia got time to tweak, it was equal on both platforms... Both GPU brands were able to use the TressFX just the same... no exclusivity.

Nvidia has TressFX handily beat.

The main thing that stands out to me is that the flow is all so silky and smooth. Wolves and people in medieval times or rural areas aren't going to have the best conditioners money can buy and not have one one iota of oil or grease in their hair. If they can somehow tone down the conditioned silkiness when the situation calls for it, then they'll mostly have hair pegged.

Now let's see how systems handle many people or even crowds on screen at the same time with this going on.

Actually in this case it would be running on AMD/Intel cpu instead of gpu. There isn't a way to run PhysX with amd/intel gpus outside Nvidia's testing labs.

I would assume this is going to require a pretty monster rig to run this fluidly in-game. I wonder what they're using just to showcase the 3 wolves...

Sounds like they borrowed what they learned from an open platform and stole it lol. Shakes head.

I honestly read the title as "Harrier Effects." And assumed it had something to do with vertical aircraft, lol. I'm an idiot.
