Computer much slower than when I built it - Page 2

-IF- I get a new drive i'll probably get an SSD. So I don't need a big one then? Just enough for my OS? I have a 2 Terabyte 5400rpm drive (but fast for 5400, as far as reviews have told me) so would I just put all my programs on there? Like...all of them? And literally just have my SSD for my OS?

You can fit the OS and all your programs on a 64GB drive, easily on a 128GB SSD. The OS only takes up ~10GB...

The HDD would be for your personal data and games library.

And that drive you have is still slow for the OS. lol

1) Re-install windows
2) Completely clean the entire computer, re-apply thermal paste to your CPU and wash your heatsink (Obviously without the fans on it)
3) Thats about it. Maybe get a second one of your HDD's to run in RAID 0.

This is a pretty fresh install. Just formatted 2 months ago? ...and i've been keeping it pretty organized.

I may do the the thorough cleaning of the inside and re-applying the heatsink. But getting it on the first time was such a pain lol. Would that one make a noticeable impact?
That so only if your CPU is over heating, you don't need to wash your cooler if it is not over heating. Just vacuum or blow the dust out of your PC.

5400 rpm hdd for os? Damn that sounds bad, if not terrible.

The real problem in your pc being slow is in that thin. Grab yourself an SSD and you will be very happy.

Also, you only got 4 gb of ram on that machine? Get at least one more stick to bring it up to 8, or as you said earlier, 2 4gb stick and get a total of 12.

I have a drum VST with a 40 gig library of sounds lol. And I do a lot of screen capping for my let's plays....but I suppose I could record them to my 5400 drive even if I get an ssd, no? I mean, it works fine on it now. I think I would want at LEAST 128...preferably double that at least, though.

Alright guys, thanks for all the info. My mind is made up. I'll get 2 more 4gig sticks of my corsair vengeance ram and an SSD. ...so, my only other question is what's a relatively inexpensive SSD with good performance? xD

I would recommend getting a not big SSD and then doing junction points for your program files over to your other HDD's.

Samsung 840 Evo is where you seem to get most for your money

Here in denmark its one of the cheapest SSD´s you can buy and its not slow either

So, now on to some questions. First off, what could be causing all this? Is it just naturally that PCs slow down over a few years? ...

Sounds like the typical lots of crap eating up the memory and forcing pagefile HDD trashing. Posology:

- Exterminate all the useless memory-robbing crap with msconfig.

- Give Ccleaner free rein to mope up the survivors.

- Disable non-needed services.

- More tips here.

Then get a SSD with capacity for the OS at least, and as most RAM as you can.
