I recently hopped on the 7990 train.. - Page 2

Hmm I tested my 7990 overnight.. It appears to be quite quiet.. But if you put your ear near the GPU it is very very clear you can hear the whine.. Its pitch is quite high. Stock it is at: 900 Clock, 1375 Mem, and 1175 VDDC. The noise is only annoying when I am not Skyping, TS, or playing music.. It becomes kind of a ringing in my ears.. I will overclock and post my results and whether or not the card became quieter.. I would not want to RMA this beast (It weighs A TON, at least 10+ LBs.)

EDIT- Not with ear near to the case I mean. I was easily 2-3 feet away/above the rig.. My fans are dead silent in my case compared to my house's ambient noise.. But the card.. Argh its a slight ringing in the back of your head/ears and is a bit irritating.. Probably will be more annoying later on.

WELL. The voltages are locked.. If there is anyway around that it would be a great help to me.. But when I do successfully get the volts up by .001 the whining completely disappears..(What I mean by successful is a few seconds after the card alters the voltages back to default.) That only lasts a few seconds/a boot phase.. I think there is a dual BIOS button but I am not sure how to properly use it..

I would RMA it, that sound is no good in the long run.

Straight to RMA land and hearing aids when the coil whine blows your eardrums out. I used mine for all of 2 hours before I couldn't stand it any more.

Sorry to hear that you are having issues!

You should RMA it until you get one that doesnt whine at all. You can ask the retailer to ship you a new card before you send it back, this way you wont have to wait.

Yeah there is a rebate for 70$ so.. I think ill just deal with PowerColor's Customer service over Neweggs. I mean the noise isn't bad I have a 5.1 which I leave playing music while I'm at the PC but.. I am always running my mining program in the background so the whining disappears when under significant load. So I guess I'll see how bad it gets in this next week or so, as I have been out of the house most of the time lately and only played a game or so of BF3. I would like to keep it but getting a quiet one sounds mighty fine also.

I really advise that you RMA it with newegg ASAP, since they are most likely much easier to work with that PowerColor.
