Computational Physicist in Japan

Thread Starter
Hi,

I'm a physicist by training, currently consulting for a large unnamed firm on improving certain aspects of their production processes. It would be a bit ironic if I could disclose what it is they do as it's closely related to the topic of this forum.

One of the things I'm working on right now involves running simulations using a rather large data set - approximately 1 TB of data made up of records that average about 200 bytes. A simulation cycle on my existing server (an older HP machine with a dual E5640 at 2.67GHz) takes about 12 hours, dominated by CPU (I/O is about 10% of the time)

I am interested in building a simulation machine, hopefully one I can host at home as the data center where my server is will not take another machine (a friend is doing me a favor basically).

Right now very little of my code can be helped by a GPU, so mostly I'm interested in raw CPU/memory/I/O performance, hopefully at a modest price compared to some high end gaming builds I've been seeing.

The last time I built things myself was in the mid 80s, using TTL chips, discrete transistors, soldering irons, etc. and things sure seem more friendly now.

Cheers,
O.

Wow, cool stuff! Welcome to OCN! This forum is great for advice on pushing your hardware to the limit!

Also, speaking of Japan...I need to get me some more of that okonomiyaki mix......that stuff is delicious.

Welcome!

Head over to general hardware, copypasta the parts of this post with your workload and such, and ask for advice.

Also, be sure to include a general budget.
