Subwoofer Recommendation

Thread Starter

Budget: 600 and Under

Usage: 80% Music, 20 Movies

Other: Less important than quality but I'd like a subwoofer with as much output as possible

From what I've heard a lot of subwoofers are okay for movies, but fall short when one listens to music. I'm looking for the best quality 600 dollars can buy. Also I would like to go with 12 inches, as anything bigger seems like it would be over 1000.

I have the vtf-2 on my list, I've heard good things

Those who help will be  rewarded

I'm in the same market right now and have my eyes set on the SVS SB-1000. Here's a fairly in-depth review of it: http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/subwoofers/84015-dracullus-svs-sb-1000-review.html

Both the SB-1000 and VTF-2 get a lot of good praise over at AVS Forum so you can't really go wrong with either.

Have you looked at the Outlaw LFM-1? There are 2 models the Plus and the EX. I believe the LFM is codeveloped with HSU. The EX is the more expensive model and is regularly priced at $649. However, they have several sales throughout the year where they knock down the price or include free shipping. I bought the EX last year when they put on sale for $599 plus free shipping. It is an excellent sub that can play low and has plenty of output.

It really depends on your mains too. If you're mostly listening to music 10"-12" subs are generally recommended to keep the bass "tight" but that can also be achieved with large floor standing speakers. For example, I don't hear an audible difference with my subs on or off when listening to music on my RTi-A9's because they have plenty of grunt down low. A sub made a huge difference when I was using bookshelf speakers as mains though. The only way to hear the subs when listening to music with the A9's is to put the amps way up and listen to something really bass heavy just for fun (rap, dubstep, etc).

But when watching District 9 I definitely notice the subs for that chest-pounding, wall-shaking bass. I guess what I'm getting at is if you don't have a great pair of mains, you may want to put the $600 towards that first.

I'm actually in your position also but have a 99.998% music to movie ratio. I've heard good things about the HSU and Outlaw also as well as Dayton

Dayton Audio RS1200K 12" Reference Series 500 Watt Subwoofer Kit http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=300-742

or look at this fully assembled Dayton Audio T1003A 10" 240 Watt Subwoofer

Well if you want output you need to build a DIY horn subwoofer..for 600 bucks you might be able to get one built with the amp??

http://www.parts-express.com/cat/home-a-v/3

here is a site that does DIY Subwoofers. Ill post a link to the list of DIY Subs so you can see what types have been built and some info on them:

http://www.avsforum.com/t/1104368/master-index-of-diy-subwoofer-projects/0_60

I built a DIY Sub with a Mach 5 IXL 18" driver in a 10Cu. ft box and will never buy another sub unless I DIY... The DIY is about as good as they can get.. Plus a decent price..

You should be able to find a used Elemental Designs A5-350 in that price range, hell of a sub, but the company has since went underwater and left a lot of people high and dry

edit - scratch that, I'd say that's more a 80% MOVIE and 20% music sub. It is damn nice though, but I'm contemplating replacing mine with 2 Epik Empires
