Imagine your company spent more than $100 million developing a product. Now imagine that a competitor came along and cloned your product and distributed a near-perfect replica of it. Not good, right? If you're Apple, you spend years and tens of millions of dollars fighting it, determined to be the one and only source of your product.

If you're Red Hat, however, you embrace it—as Red Hat CEO Jim Whitehurst told ReadWrite in an interview.

Let that sink in for a moment.

The CEO of a BILLION dollar company just said that.

His awesomeness is only surprassed by how simple is his office is. thumb.gif

So essentially it seems like the CEO looks at it like this:

"We release to OS for free and charge people for support in an enterprise setting"

He believes that his support system is better than CentOS, so he isn't worried about his revenue stream from a copy. In fact, he believes that it will help his business in the long run. By giving people/businesses another option that is basically the same option, he gets them used to using what is essentially Red Hat anyway.

It seems like a sound business move IMO.

Says something right there. I like how he makes the point of all the money Apple has thrown at trying to keep everybody else down. By not doing that, he saves that money, plus exposes more and more people to his product.
