5+ Ghz A10 6800K mini-ITX build - Page 2

Indeed. I let her run at 4.8 over night running the small fft test. Temp didn't change beyond what was originally posted so...I'll call that stable. The down side is, since MSI seems to have taken away the ability to change the multiplier in the bios, I have to re-OC in overdrive or MSI control center every time I reboot to get it back to where I want it. I've got an email out to MSI tech support to see if they have any intention of re-enabling this feature in the future...until then, I'll just live with having to make the change every time. Worst case senario, I could always either a) setup a startup script that sets everything back up...this would at least get me back where it belongs once in Windows, or b) see if I still have it in my to hack a bios update file and force it to allow it. ClickBios, MSI's windows Bios utility, lists CPU ratio (multiplier) as an enableable feature...but it doesn't actually enable when you tell it to. This tells me the ability is there...MSI has just set it to dormant. Keeping my fingers crossed that they intend to release a 'functional' update soon.

So...MSI tech support just made me feel like a dumb@ss a bit. I had sent them an email to see if they had any intention of readding the ability to control the multiplier in bios as it seemed silly to me that their software could control it, but not their bios. The reply was as follows...

"with the CPU ratio field highlighted, just type in the number you want it set to". Awesome. Hopefully I'm not the only one out here that has been stumped by something that simple. On a bright side. I'm now OC'd at 4.8 Ghz from bios forward...no more annoying profiles...YAY!

Edit: Stability report.

She's strong and stable at 4.8Ghz running the 1866 OC'd to 2133 at 1.65v with timings of 14:11:11:29. Can't ask for much more than that out of the ram. If I get time this weekend, I'll run an in depth long term Prime95 blend test on it and see how she reacts to a couple of hours pegged (if my little 15 minute run a moment ago is any indication, the answer is quite happily).

Now I'm itching to get my hands on a heat sink for this NB and an SSD to see just how fast she can fly devil.gif

Just a quick Saturday early afternoon update. Just did a Prime95 test a 5Ghz with Ram at 2133. 30 minutes in all still looked stable and under temp thresholds so...

Plan is to try and do a little more work on her this evening and see what I can manage. At the very least I want to put her through a full hour each running a blend test and a small fft. Assuming she passes there (and early indications are good) I'll try her at 5.1. I'd like to get into the +1Ghz club as well as the 5Ghz club with this little guy.

Packin' up and heading to my buddies place. We're gonna see what we can do for his 8350 while my 6800 is going through her paces.

Great to see. Going to do any gaming benchmwarks, stock vs OC'd or something?

I surely will...not entirely sure what yet.

OC update. I reached 5.1Ghz without too much trouble. Unfortunately, running prime95 at 5.1Ghz it does eventually hit the dreaded illegal sumout. The real annoyance is, it seems to be entirely too varied, and doesn't seem to follow any sort of pattern what so ever. One time when I run it, it'll run for 3 hours without tossing an error. Next time, it'll toss 2 test in. Doesn't seem to matter if I run it immediately after boot up or 5 hours later after playing with it all day. Annoying. To any end she reached 5.1Ghz, and ran stable...mostly. I'm gonna dial her back down till I find a sweet spot of zero failure and that's where she'll live on the CPU side. If this board would let me control the CPU voltage instead of insisting upon doing it itself, this wouldn't be an issue, but alas...

I had planned to dial her back a bit any way for the sake of GPU head room, but would have obviously preferred to have done that out of preference instead of necessity. Guess I've figured out which parts limitations I need to be working with here...for any one else shopping for an FM2 ITX mobo, be ye warned...the MSI has a couple of annoying limitations. On the bright side...I've got more than ample cooling for taking the GPU side up to at least 1Ghz assuming she'll run there without the need for too much extra voltage... :-/

Update to come once I figure out the most stable over all OC's.

Figured I'd toss an update out there as I hadn't made one in a few days. Current OC's are as follows.

CPU 4.9Ghz up from 4.1. Passed 12 hours of Prime95 and 24 hours of Aida64 testing so...quite stable.
GPU 1Ghz up from 844Mhz. Passed 24 hours of Aida64 testing so again...seemingly quite stable.
DDR3 2133 up from 1866 Passed 12 hours of Prime95 blend test and 24 hours of Aida64 testing. Awesomely stable.

System temps continue to reach the low to mid 70's C while under load...one day I'll actually get around to working on that eh-smiley.gif

I'll post more as more is available.

Very nice little system. I've been wanting to build SFF APU but alas I haven't seen any mITX boards down here in New Zealand.
