Advice on 7950 Crossfire Cooling

Hello all,

I was wondering if it was possible to have some veteran advice on my dilemma.

Basically After getting all hyped up reading overclock.net I decided to build myself a new PC !but unfortunately I grossly underestimated the temps a crossfire 7950 would yield me wackosmiley.gif. My idle temperatures are acceptable anywhere from 38-43 but my load temps are quite frightening 83+ (near full usage) and that's not even under prolonged usage.

I am currently using

600T case with stock fans replaced with Bitfenix pro

ASrock z77 extreme 4 motherboard

1 X Powercolor 7950 AX7950 3GBD5-2DHP

1 X Sapphire 7950 100352-2L (I believe they are indeed both reference cards but I haven't unmounted them yet to check)

I thought about water-cooling but unfortunately the start up costs are out of my price range, I considered adding side panel fans but I'm not convinced it will lower the temperatures enough not counting the extra noise generated. Finally that leaves me with aftermarket coolers , I've done a little digging around and it seems the only one that is commonly mentioned is the Artic Accelero Xtreme 7970, sadly I could only find input on single card owners with this cooler.

If I may ask. would it fit well with my setup? I do seem to have a the required 3 PCI slot space but I wouldn't know how close the top card will be on the bottom one.

Assuming it does fit wouldn't the top card cooler function with a handicap? as there would be so little space for the fans to work with

I would really be grateful for input on this

Thank You

you can prolly keep the sapphire as primary and the powercolor the secondary card but replace its cooler to this . . .

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835426031

i would replace all the thermal paste with a better one and if the sapphire does not have any heatsinks on the vrms, then i'll add those, too.

maybe another 120 fan just right behind the 2 cards if there is room.

got the idea about the gelid here . . .

Thank You for the suggestion rdr09 ,seems like a good cheaper option , pardon my ignorance but for the VRM heatsinks do I use the ones that come with the cooler or different ones and if so what would you recommend buying?

Thanks!

you need to make some measurements. not sure if these things will fit . . .

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835708009

the gelid will come with a bunch of them, so it might have enough sinks for 2 cards (just for the vrms).

you said water cooling would be too expensive but have you thought about a corsair H series closed loop cooling system? (or any other closed loop system like the antec khuler) they range from about $50 to $110 and it is possible to mount them on a GPU

Most aftermarket coolers wont fit in CF/SLIbecause they use up more then 2 slots.

The Gelid Icy Vision is a nice cooler for the price but its not good enough for the 7950/70
The VRM's get very hot under this cooler and make's overclocking alot harder compared to even the stock cooler.

Trust me, i know i have tested lots of aftermarket coolers and run a 7950 with a Gelid Icy Vision atm to.

The best aftermarket air cooler is still the Arctic Acellero for power hungry cards.
For less power hungry cards the Scythe Setsugen is very nice, its also fits in CF/SLI.

but both use aluminum heatsinks for the vrms. unless the fans don't do a good enough job blowing over them.

Thanks Stickeelion, I did think of it, but is there any other place I could get the brackets from? From what I've read Dwood does not carry them in stock atm..

and Thanks again rdr09 and Farih, guess I'll keep learning before making a decision.

VRM's just get to hot on a 7950/70.

Tryed an Icy Vision before on a 6970 and it was fine.

I have a Icy Vision on a 7950 now and the VRM's get to hot and limits overclocking.
I got the GPU at just 1000/1350mhz with the fan at about half speed, the GPU only gets up to 55 degrees, the VRMs 90 !
With overclocking i have seen wel over 100 degrees on the vrm's with this cooler.
I even used better and thicker thermal pads but to no effect.

In my book the gelid icy vision is a no go on 7950/70's unless you keep it stock or lowly clocked.
