Or maybe those Ferrari yellow frogs and purple midgets running around in a bright green swamp were the real gory deal? No, I know. It was the bright white abominable snowman that lumbered after me in the middle of a meadow kissed with spring rain that really gave it that aura of terror.
Face it, D3 is at least as dark as D2. I'd even argue that it's more so, aside from a few questionable enemy designs and a few portions of certain maps. Compared to D1 they're both practically Whimseyshire though.
The biggest part of the reason that I would say D3 felt less horrific than D2 is that your enemies and allies don't shut the hell up. It's hard to build suspense when your follower is spouting off at the mouth about nonsense constantly, and your enemies are apparently on your side given how much they enjoy talking to you. Without people prattling on constantly and a slightly more atmospheric (and less "epic") soundtrack, you might be surprised at how dark D3 actually feels.
You've mistaken. I know the game quite well, I played plenty myself. D1 was certainly dark. D2 was much lighter, but there was still a sense of hopelessness, with only a sliver of light (the Player). D3 simply doesn't instill that feeling. But that's me. I'm surprised so many here disagree.
I think it's the textures that kill it, or the arcade-style pace and lack of depth it has.
