my PC won't idle

This means no screen saver or auto monitor shut down. Any ideas?

You are using Windows 7, right?

Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Power Options

Then on the left side, you can change settings by clicking on "Choose when to turn off the display" and "Change when the computer sleeps".

That would work, but unfortunately my computer won't idle.

Idle is a pre-req for monitor turn off.

Maybe the sensor on your mouse is the culprit? Try turning off or unplugging your mouse and waiting.
