Then sure... I'd be more apt to buy some splitters or converters for existing molex/sata connectors if need be rather than that piece you linked to, just because of price. $15 is a bit silly for that piece.

Indeed. Don't buy anything if its over $5-6 because then it just doesn't feel like the right decision.
There are many people here on OCN who have done the wiring stuff themselves to power some LED's. Just make sure what you're powering is really 12V and not more or less.
