Worthwhile upgrade from phenom 965 @ 3.9GHz to Fx-8320 OC'd with Giga 990fxa-ud3 ?

Thread Starter
For some reason I have a bad feeling in my gut that an 8320 at around 4.4-4.6 GHz will not be too much of an improvement in games compared with my current 965BE @ 3.9GHz. Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about, because I've only been looking into the 8350 but because of $ issues I can save that needed extra money for more important things and just go with an 8320

I haven't heard too much at all about how it performs in games. I play a mix of cpu and gpu bound games:

Metro LL
BF3 + 4
HoN
Planetside2
Grid 2
witcher 2 + upcoming 3
ESO online beta

Right now with my 965 at 3.9Ghz and my Gigabyte GTX 760 OC'd to 1332 MHz core and 7008 MHz memory clock I'm able to play at these estimated fps values for some games I've tried here's what I'm seeing:

= Metro LL (1080p, Physx, 2x SSAA, Very high settings, very high tesselation) ~ 40-50fps ****without SSAA runs a lot higher****
= BF3 ~ 35-80 fps depending on where I am in the game, more ppl = lower fps obviously biggrin.gif, but you all know that cuz ur bright whipper- snappers!

So i guess my question is in the games I'm playing like BF3 will I see an FPS increase, and general FPS increase in games that are more CPU bound? I'm torn whether to hang onto my phenom II 965BE @ 3.9 or SATIATE (mmmm.....) my upgrade desires. And what do you expect me to get for a modest OC with my corsair H60??? I know, i know , ppl say it performs just like the hyper 212+ but still I don't know what some of these ppl are getting with their 8320's and similar cooling situations.

rig

-Phenom II x4 965 OC'd to 3.9Ghz w/ 2400MHz NB
-Gigabyte 760 GTX Windforce factory OC plus aftermarket OC = 1332MHz core and 7GB mem clock
-8GB Corsair Vengeance Pro Series 1600MHz/ 9-9-9-24 / 1.5V
-Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3
-Corsair H60 cooler
-650W Antec Earthwatts
-Antec 900 Case
-150GB HDD

What about switching to intel i5 4670k with z87 you will see a fps increase since u r bottlenecked

P.s h60 performs like TT Frio or V6 GT

A quad core Phenom at 3.9Ghz isn't really going to bottleneck you that much. Not enough to justify switching to a completely different platform (money!).

That said take a look HERE. Just gives you a rough idea.

Yes an FX will be an upgrade, but justify the money first with reviews. I personally wouldn't upgrade just for gaming, if you will benefit in other areas then go ahead.
The FX-6300 seems to be the sweet spot of decent overclocking with great performance.

Even with overclock in some games the x4 cant catch the fx 63/83

I think it is worth it. Piledriver is ~15% faster clock for clock than Phenom II cores and couple that with a 10% higher overclock and youre looking at a sizeable performance boost. Thats a pretty solid motherboard so you should have no trouble hitting 4.4 on a 8320 and could probably do that on close to stock voltage (based on my 8150 doing 4.3 on stock volts). It might not be totally "worth it" dollar for dollar but it will still be a noticeable jump in performance. I noticed a bump in performance going from a X6 1090 @ 4.0 GHz to my current 8150 at 4.5GHz. So Id say youd definitely see even more going to a Piledriver.
