gtx 780 coil whine - Page 3

Thread Starter
I have done some testing, in summary I think neither the gpu nor psu is at fault.

test 1
original corsair psu with different gtx 780 [zotac] - same whine in wei and games.

test2
I had purchased a cheap psu for about 70 off amazon japan. The brand is owltech raider 750w and had 80plus Silver badge.
I ran wei, same whine
tried to run games, but reboot due to poor power supply.

test3
So for completeness ran in sli with original corsair psu, same whine
While playing metro , turning on vsync reduces whine but not fully.

So now I think it is the motherboard that may be the cause, but it is hard to pinpoint where the whine is coming from.

As I had stated before, get a paper towel tube (or any tube for that matter), put it up against your ear, and listen for the source of where the whine is coming from. It's quick, cheap, and the least amount of hassle.

Yes, I used this method, and Its originating from graphics card, especially near power pin connectors. With the case closed it is not at noticeable, so maybe I will get used to it.
A few posts earlier I mentioned random whine while idle, I found out this is from psu spinning up and turning off periodically, but with the case closed it is not audible.

I doubt it would be the motherboard as I have had the same issue switched mobo only and same sound. Try plugging in your computer to different outlets on wall,

I have it on my MSI 780...but the only time I have ever heard it is during WEI and Ice Storm with 3Dmark. Someone had mentioned that this happens with extremely high frame rates that seems to be true with mine. It had something to do with resonance with the higher framerate causing the whine. Any other game I play I never hear it, even at max load is fine.

So that is probably why V-Sync works with stopping it since it more or less caps the FPS to 60 or whatever your monitor's refresh rate is.

There is whine whether vsync is enabled or not. For whine to occur for me, I run any game/benchmark at any fps range and it occurs. Although enabling vsync does reduce whine level slightly.
