What is current gen hardware really capable of?

Thread Starter
I was just wondering. Is our hardware really being pushed to it's limits when say, we're playing Crysis 3? Or is it just bad coding or lack of care on the developer's part? Perhaps crappy drivers? Bit of both? How are next-gen games going to run smoothly on high end systems (is mine even high-end still or am I in the mid-end system range now with the release of next-gen hw?)

If not, what could be the true potentials of say, my GPUs or 780s? This is really just a hypothetical question, but I was just curious. The entire reason this question popped up was because, as drivers mature, performance and stability does as well. So if performance is improving with the release of new (stable) drivers, couldn't there be some kind of hidden issues preventing the full power of our hardware from being unleashed?

Of course, inadequate work by the developers can always hinder the full capacity of the hardware. Just look at GTA IV. It was apparently very badly ported from console to PC, hence the terrible frame rates. Even on my build, with Haswell and a GTX 770 - products that are barely 3 months old - I can't get over 80 FPS stable.

However, I think that big games like Crysis 3 and BF3, which were optimized for PC from the start, can definitely take advantage of good hardware.

Crysis 3 and Skyrim or Starcraft 2 can't be compared. Crysis is highly optimised and runs even beautifully on my relatively aging hardware, whereas Skyrim is just a disaster due to being coded in x87 because Bethesda are lazy wastes of space and that counts for Blizzard too. Optimisation is very important and without it you get a single or dual core coded mess using code that was replaced with more efficient coding over a decade ago. While I am making obvious stabs at those two games in particular it's still the absolute truth that a game that uses the latest SSE or other instruction sets will perform better.

Crysis 3,Tomb Raider and metro last light are games that are very optimized for PC,as for games like BF3 it doesnt qutie know what to do with with most cards, not to mention when they are running in sli....

This is your answer.

That's on a single GTX 680 and it maintains + 30 FPS at all times.

UnrealEngine 4 FTW

The thing is though. We wont see graphics this good for a long time in a game. The reason is that game graphics need to be scalable. Most devs make there game so that they can be run on pretty low end systems and that translates into worse graphics for everyone.
