Would Quad/Tri Sli 770s Kill a Corsiar HX1050?

Cliff notes:

Traded a HX1050 to someone. PSU's about 6 months old, 4 of that spent in a box (side project didn't happen). Worked fine for the short while I used it.

When I met the guy to trade he was talking about doing quad sli benchmarks with 770s then going down to tri sli. Next day he messages me saying that the PSU is dead, he's also suddenly selling all his 770s.

I figure things can happen and maybe the psu just died but I wanted to know if what he was doing could potentially kill the PSU and if so if there would be any obvious visible things to look for. Not a huge fan of having to "tradeback" and then pay out of pocket to RMA it. Only reason I'm really considering it is cause I haven't tested the psu in about a month since I stopped using it.

I mean, 4x 770's would REALLY push a 1050 watt PSU. (230wattsx4=890watts).

But, the PSU has overvoltage protection, etc that would have prevented it from getting fried by to much power draw.

Did the PSU ever work for him? Or did it die during benches.

In my book, DOA is your responsibility. If it ever worked for him, then died, its his responsibility.

It could of just died. That's a lot of power needed for 4 770's and the rest of the system.. The way you are saying that all of a sudden he is selling all the 770's and the psu is dead, sounds like he might have over loaded it. If he was oc'ing every gpu and the cpu, I bet he blew the psu. Does he want to trade back? To me it sounds like he blew it, but that is just my thoughts.

edit: If it was working for him and then died while he was pushing the system really hard, benchmarking, I believe it would fall on his fault. Also 230 x 4 = 920 and not 890 watts

I would think no. That is a plenty powerful PSU. Sitting can be bad for some parts, but 1 month is not enough unless kept it in your shower smile.gif I think you are correct there is an issue with the 770's.

That said: you should help RMA it. Try having him send it in with his return address after you get the RMA authorisation. If they send it back to you for whatever reason, you are just out of pocket for 1 shipping.

Hope that helps.

PS. an HX1050 The H needs an "an" as it is pronounced with a vowel sound, the long A sound. Like I have an HTC phone smile.gif

Yeah he does want to trade back. I don't really mind trading back just don't feel like having to pay out to ship for an RMA if he blew it.

I'm torn on the situation cause I didn't think to test it before giving it to him and I'm sure he's not going to say "yeah I was using it and blew it up so now I want to swap back". But I'm pretty sure there's nothing that coulda died in it while it sat in a box.

He wants to swap back and not RMA it. Figure a PSU to ship is gona cost me like $30.00 bucks frown.gif. Originally was looking to sell the psu to get some extra cash but he didn't want to spend much on it so offered a trade which was easier for me to sell anyways. Now I'll just be out unfortunately it seems.

I would ask him how it worked when he tested it, and how it handled one card overclocked. That sorta of thing. Get him talking about it, what happened, how it died. The more you can find out the better. If he is silent, or does not want to talk you know something is up.

I would stick with offering to help or to RMA it for him. Trades are final not a way for him to test a system for free.

What did you trade for it? (outa curiosity)

Yeah, I'll give it a try and see what he says, though the way he msg'd me about it seemed very much like he is playing it off as (or maybe it really did happen) that it never worked.

Got a 660ti for it. Was looking for about $170 (CAD) on the psu end so but they don't move as quickly as GPU's do so I figured I could get very close to if not a little more for the GPU and move it faster. That said I get my gigabyte board back from RMA tomorrow and was considering putting another desktop together with it too.
